Graphing Stories - 15 seconds at a time

Graphing Stories - 15 seconds at a time | technologies |
Graphing Stories: Short video stories that help students learn to graph on a plane.
John Dalziel's insight:

Graphing Story is a maths project by Dan Meyer.
It’s a simple concept which asks learners to take a video of an everyday event (e.g. weight-lifting) and create a simple graph. The idea is to show the relationship between time and the event. Everything can be graphed, and their grasp of graphs grows better when they understand the event (or vice-versa).
Some of these may seem obvious, but scratch below the surface and practitioners will see how real-world events can trigger their learners curiosity and, from the learners viewpoint, make learning more interesting.

Open online Level 2 mathematics course for adults
John Dalziel's insight:

Although in its early stages of development, Citizen Maths is an on-line resource anyone can use — to discover how maths can be a powerful tool for solving those problems that come up at work and in every day life.
Learners work through the video tutorials and hands-on activities at their own pace.
This may suit some learners as it allows them to...
   - Fit their learning around other commitments,
   - Do much of it wherever they are — even on the move,
   - Work at their own pace,
   - Re-do any parts they want, as often as they want and
   - Choose the maths areas they need.
Even better, it costs them precisely zero.

Typeform: - Free Online Survey & Form Builder

Typeform: - Free Online Survey & Form Builder | technologies |
Create awesome online forms with Typeform, the FREE online survey tool that makes asking questions easy, human & beautiful. Sign up now and try it out!
John Dalziel's insight:

Typeform takes a completely fresh approach to asking questions online and puts user experience and engagement at the forefront. Optimized to look stunning on all devices (desktop and mobile), Typeform is well worth exploring as your go-to tool for...
   - polling,
   - quizzing,
   - surveying
...and engaging...
   - learners,
   - staff
   - employers or
   - any other stakeholders.
Typeform isn't a dedicated assessment platform, but it's an ideal place to put together...
   - a short quiz,
   - a test or
   - a poll.
Users can style and design their questions in hundreds of innovative and fun ways as well as embed images and video to make your test informative as well as evaluative.
NOTE: With a Typeform account users can review the results of every form they've created in the application, and they can also have Typeform pass results into a Google Spreadsheet.
This offers a lot more portability of data for...
   - printing,
   - exporting or
   - simply collating for later use.
If practitioners are comfortable with their learners using their email to signup to Typeform, the tool can be of great value in many different areas of study.
Typeform can be used for research to poll or survey opinions and feedback. While it is easy to deliver forms digitally using social media or email, one more interactive way is to take advantage of the mobile interface and have students poll attendees in person using devices at events or in public.

Get Skaffl - classroom workflow on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
John Dalziel's insight:

Skaffl could provide a solution for practitioners who want a simple way to distribute and collect assignments without wading through a myriad of extra features that they won’t use.
Skaffl is a free iPad app that is designed to help practitioners...
   - distribute,
   - collect, and
   - grade assignments
...on their iPad.
On Skaffl practitioners can create 'classrooms' that their learners join through a class code.
Once a 'classroom' is created practitioners can distribute assignments and hand-outs to their learners.
Assignments can be created in the app or practitioners can attach items created outside of the Skaffl app.
Their learners can submit work through the app.
Practitioners can grade their learners’ assignments directly within the app.
Assignments that aren’t going to be graded (a rough draft of an essay, for example) can be annotated by practitioners to provide learners with ungraded feedback.
To sum up, with Skaffl
Practitioners can:
   - Create activities for students to complete
   - Plan ahead and save activities for distribution when you need them

   - Collect student work

   - Annotate and grade student assignments
Learners can:

   - Hand in their assignments from other apps
   - Annotate and complete written assignments
   - Ask questions directly to their teachers using assignment comments

AudioPal - Free internet audio mp3 player for personal websites | technologies |
Make a Free mp3 audio player & embed audio on any website. Use text-to-speech, mic, or upload mp3! Make an interactive website with AudioPal (no player download needed)! Get your free player.
John Dalziel's insight:

AudioPal, a free service, offers three way to create short audio messages to embed in any web presence.
Users can...
   - record using the microphone connected to their computer;
   - record by calling AudioPal's phone system; or
   - create a message by using AudioPal's text-to-speech function.
AudioPal has many potential uses within education but does require users enter an email address in order to access the embed code and sharing links.

If learners don't have email accounts, practitioners could set-up a classroom Gmail account that all learners enter.

All of the AudioPal messages that their learners create would then go to that one email account that they manage.

John Dalziel's insight:

This "Bad Maths" Flickr group, is worth a closer look, contains lots of examples of bad maths spotted in stores and other public places.
Some of the bad maths is obvious, other examples are not as obvious.
Why not ask learners to take similar photographs or of other things where mathematics, in the real world is evident. Functional Skills Practitioners can certainly modify this to suit the different courses their learners are doing.

Shoo Rayner - learn to draw better - YouTube

Shoo Rayner - learn to draw better - YouTube | technologies |
Everyone can draw. Anyone can learn to draw better. Forget about art. Drawing is a language that helps you communicate with others. Get some paper, make some...
John Dalziel's insight:

ShooRayner Drawing is YouTube channel that provides a variety of instructional videos to help learners and children (and anyone else interested in drawing) learn to draw better.
The videos are created by artist and children’s book author and illustrator Shoo Rayner.
Practitioners could probably use these videos with your own learners, especially with a flipped learning model, to teach them how to draw different things.
Most importantly, the videos provide younger learners a very solid starting basis into the concept of drawing which will, once mastered, enable them to create gorgeous drawings of anything they want.
There is also a section for artists and advanced creators where Rayner shares interesting pieces of advice about drawing and being a creative person.

The resulting story is displayed in a vertically scrolling format with each of the images occupying all of the available space within the browser.
Completed stories can be shared publicly or kept private.
Each public story can be shared via Twitter, Facebook, email, or embedding into a webpage.
I recommend importing high resolution images as smaller images will become pixelated when enlarged to Thematic's full size. After importing your pictures you can add text and rearrange the sequence in which your images appear on your screen.
