Word Map

This experiment brings together the power of Google Translate and the collective knowledge of Wikipedia to put into context the relationship between language and geographical space.
John Dalziel's insight:

This is for those studying languages.
Just...
   - Type in any word in any language, from Arabic to Zulu, then...
   - Click any of the links on the map to hear it spoken.
The map shows how words spread around the World, and what languages share the same spelling.
Clicking a word in a country tells users more about the language with a link to its Wikipedia page.
Note: it works best with simple words.

The Jigsaw Classroom

The Jigsaw Classroom | technologies | Scoop.it

The jigsaw technique is a cooperative learning approach that reduces racial conflict among learners, promotes better learning, improves learner motivation, and increases enjoyment of the learning experience.

John Dalziel's insight:

I wonder how many learners, attending Initial Teacher Training courses, are made aware of the "Jigsaw" Teaching Strategy?
If they are, I guess it will be as "just one in a number of cooperative learning strategies".
In fact, researchers have found that Jigsaw in particular improves learners’ social-emotional learning; learners demonstrated increased feelings of...
   - autonomy,
   - competence, and
   - intrinsic motivation (Hänze & Berger, 2007).
Jigsaw learners also demonstrate...
   - improved attitudes toward their peers and
   - reduced indicators of racial prejudice (Walker & Crogan, 1998).
Many practitioners are looking for ways to help learners become more independent learners who also function well in groups.
Used, as and when appropriate, Jigsaw can fulfil those needs.

If you’re new to the Jigsaw strategy a video that will show you how to do it or, if you've tried Jigsaw without success, may help you fine-tune , is available to view at...

The Barefoot Project: primary computing

The Barefoot Project: primary computing | technologies | Scoop.it
Barefoot computing provides free cross-curricular resources to help you teach the computer science elements of the new primary computing curriculum.
John Dalziel's insight:

The Barefoot Computing Project is a DfE funded project.
Its aim is to provide primary teachers of computing with a range of materials for classroom teaching and professional development.
Developed by Computing At School (CAS), the package contains...
   - workshops,
   - exemplar teaching materials and
   - subject-knowledge enhancement materials.
These enable non-specialists to teach the important transferable skills and understanding coming under the umbrella-term of ‘computational thinking’, such as...
   - algorithms,
   - decomposition,
   - abstraction,
   - pattern recognition
...and so on.
The children are helped to develop mental models that have been shown to underpin and strengthen learning in computing.
With a cross-curricular scope and employing a range of fun and engaging teaching approaches, there is something for all teachers and young learners in infant and primary settings.
A must for Initial Teacher Training and those tasked with delivering the computer science elements of the primary computing curriculum!

Practitioners will find an abundance of learning tools to use to create their classes such as...

ExtractPDF - a Free online PDF Extractor

ExtractPDF - a Free online PDF Extractor | technologies | Scoop.it
Get Images, Text or Fonts out of a PDF File with this free online service. No installation or registration necessary.
John Dalziel's insight:

PDFs are a different beast to Office documents — by their very nature, they’re designed so that their content can’t be meddled with — so different tools are required to extract an image from them. Fortunately, there are plenty of options available, many of which can be utilized straight from a browser.
A key concern is security. If learners, and/or practitioners, are uploading a PDF to an online tool, they should be confident that the site isn’t going to do anything untoward with the file. This might not be much of an issue in many instances, but if there’s sensitive information in the file they’re attempting to extract an image from, security should be of paramount importance.
ExtractPDF stands out from the crowd thanks to its speed and ease of use — it takes your PDF file and breaks it up into its individual sections...
   - the images,
   - the text,
   - the fonts, and
   - the metadata.

MeetingWords: Realtime Collaborative Text Editing

MeetingWords: Realtime Collaborative Text Editing | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

I've always liked Google Documents as a tool for collaborative writing, but not everyone has Google Documents.
Google Documents also requires sign-in in order to track changes.
So when groups want to quickly collaboratively create a set of notes, MeetingWords is a good option to try.
MeetingWords is a free service for creating both an online notepad and a chat room. Via MeetingWords groups can quickly create an online place to collaboratively create documents with one or more collaborators.
There's no need to register in order to use the service. Members of the collaborative group can chat in real-time while creating a document.
Every individual that's contributing to the documents being build is assigned a highlight colour so that it's easy to track who wrote what in the document.
NOTE: People who have used EtherPad (now offline) or TitanPad will notice that MeetingWords is very similar to those tools; this similarity is due to the fact that they use the same code.
