5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make With iPads (or other tablets)

5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make With iPads (or other tablets) | technologies |

Many learning providers have, or are considering, investing heavily in iPads (and other tablets) for classroom use.

This post, from edudemic highlights common mistakes many learning providers are making with iPads (and other tablets), mistakes that are in some cases crippling the success of these initiatives; they include...

1) Focusing on content apps

2) Lack of Teacher Preparation in Classroom Management of iPads  (or other tablets)

3) Treating the iPad (or other tablets) as a computer and expecting it to serve as a laptop.

4) Treating iPads (or other tablets) like multi-user devices

5) Failure to communicate a compelling answer to “Why iPads?” Or other tablets?

JellyBeanScoop Autopub description
John Dalziel's insight:

Jellybean Writer and Jellybean Scoop could be good resources for ESOL/ESL/EFL functional skills etc. Learners could read (four reading levels) fun and interesting news stories on Jellybean Scoop then write their own stories about the topics covered in the articles they've read.

Spoken™ - Where the world finds a voice. | technologies |
Where the world finds a voice.
John Dalziel's insight:

Before I say too much about Spoken, at the time of writing this, it is currently in beta.
Currently potential users will need to request an invite to use the service. My invitation arrived within seconds.
In short, Spoken is a new social network that is designed for sharing audio recordings of four minutes or less, describing itself as "Instagram for audio."
Once registered, users can...
upload audio recordings that are up to four minutes long; and
attach cover images to those recordings.
...all of their recordings will appear in their profile where people can follow them and users can follow others.
Spoken doesn't have a built-in recording tool so users have to record outside of Spoken then upload their recording.
I'll be using Audacity to make the recordings that I'll upload to Spoken.
Spoken could provide a good way for practitioners to encourage learners to post audio recordings in which they reflect on learning experiences and or share advice with other learners. At the same time learners will gain confidence with, and enhance, their spoken communication skills.
Practitioners, will have to follow each of their learners to hear their recordings.

Remind | Remind101 is now Remind

Remind | Remind101 is now Remind | technologies |
Remind (formerly Remind101) is a safe, free way for teachers to text message students and keep in touch with parents.
John Dalziel's insight:

Need to remind learners of assignments and exams?
Want to make learning environments more interactive?
Try Remind – this application has been a round for a while, but recently it added a few features like ‘Chat’ which make it a very robust tool.
Practitioners can create an account with their Google Account for free. Then they can either post the QR code or the "Class Code" (both provided by Remind) and learners, employers or any other stakeholders, with the code, can sign up.
Practitioners can then send SMS, emails or chat with their users.
Added to this they can attach documents or pdfs to share with their learners.
Ideal for on-line courses, this is the simplest tool I have seen that can make a huge impact!

Plickers stands for “paper clickers.”

Google Tone

Google Tone | technologies |
Broadcast any URL to computers within earshot.
John Dalziel's insight:

Early Days as yet but, Google has launched a new experimental Chrome extension that lets users (e.g.practitioners) transmit the URL of a website to other nearby computers (Used within the learning environment) using nothing but sound.
To try the feature...
   - all computers must first have the Google Tone Chrome extension installed and
   - all computers must be within reasonable earshot of each other.
Then when the practitioner is on a webpage they’d like to share...
   - they hit the little Google Tone tab in their browser and they’ll hear a little succession of beeps — not too dissimilar to an old ZX Spectrum computer loading a game.
   - nearby machines receive a notification with the sender’s Google profile and picture embedded within the message, and
   - the learners can open the URL on their own PC.
