Photogrammar | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:

An archive of 170,000 Photographs, Documenting the "Great Depression", has been launched by Yale.
The Farm Security Administration—Office of War Information (FSA-OWI) hired photographers, during the Great Depression, to travel across America to document the poverty that gripped the nation, hoping to build support for New Deal programs being championed by F.D.R.’s administration.
Now Yale University has launched Photogrammar, a sophisticated web-based platform for...
   -  organizing,
   -  searching (by photographer), and
   -  visualizing
...these 170,000 historic photographs.
Photogrammar also offers a handy interactive map that lets users gather geographical information about 90,000 of the photographs in the collection.

Save As Doc - Google Sheets add-on

Save As Doc - Google Sheets add-on | technologies |
Convert any Google Sheets spreadsheet into a Google Document for improved legibility of lengthy cell text entries.
John Dalziel's insight:

If practitioners use Google Forms to create and deliver quizzes/assessments to learners (and if not why not?) the only real problem we face is when we add-in short answer or essay questions.

The responses spreadsheet, if we're honest, becomes unwieldy and difficult to read.
Save As Doc, a free Google Spreadsheets Add-on, can solve that problem!
It allows users to select the cells containing learners' short answer/essay responses and turns them into a document that will appear in their Google Drive dashboard (it might take a minute or two to appear if users have selected a large set of cells); practitioners can then easily view, edit, read, download as a pdf, grade and/or, if they have to, print the resulting document.

Another must have tool for making life easier!

7 Sticky Notes - Fun, interactive, powerful and cool Sticky Notes for your Desktop!

7 Sticky Notes - Fun, interactive, powerful and cool Sticky Notes for your Desktop! | technologies |
7 Sticky Notes is a 100% free desktop notes software that creates Sticky Notes directly on your Desktop! It has a great good-looking realistic sticky note appearance with great features, and it is at the same time simple to use, reliable, and light!
John Dalziel's insight:

Post-its on the desktop or Start Screen can be extremely helpful for remembering small but important amounts of information.
Many practitioners and/or learners will prefer to stop cluttering up their desk and go digital.
7 Sticky Notes is an ideal option, for those either running Windows 7 still, or if they’re on Windows 8 but prefer the desktop over the Start Screen.
7 Sticky Notes offers plenty of options for formatting notes and the text within them.
After the installation...
   -  an icon appears in the notification tray (the area in the bottom right corner of your desktop).
   -  Right-clicking the icon provides the option to open a new note.
When a new note is opened, the Note Configuration Window will appear beside it allowing users to change...
   -  the colour of the note,
   -  the font,
   -  font size,
   -  font colour
...and more.
There’s also an option to set alarms.

MAPfrappe - Move Outlines

MAPfrappe - Move Outlines | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:

Countries have so many different shapes and sizes, so it can be hard to appreciate the true size of a country unless it is placed over another location. MAPfrappe is a Google Maps mashup in which users are provided with two maps.
On one map they can then “sketch” the initial area they want to use in their comparrison.
They can then use the second map to place it (overlap) wherever they wish.
Practitioners, and/or learners may want to show others what they’ve done, and/or want to come back to it at a later time. If that's the case, a button is provided that generates a permanent URL associated with current outlines and map views.
When users, and/or others, use the generated URL, they will return to the outlines and map that was created.

Hover.css - A collection of CSS3 powered hover effects

Hover.css - A collection of CSS3 powered hover effects | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:

Hover.css is a free CSS library to easily apply animation, within web-based resources, using the hover effect.
Users can apply the hover in call to actions, buttons, logos, images and much more.
The library comes with over 40 effects to choose from and they’re categorized according to the following...
   - 2D transforms,
   - border transitions,
   - shadow and glow transitions,
   - speech bubbles, and
   - page curls.
When dealing with the issue of trying to get a learners attention, hover is a great way to draw their attention to a link or button.

As I'm sure you're aware, hover normally works by changing the element colour or gradient state when users move their cursors over it. But, with a lot of features in CSS3, a lot of things can also be customised with the hover effect.

One of them is applying animation. And Hover.css can make it happen with ease.

Internet Archive Book Images

Internet Archive Book Images | technologies |
The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to...
John Dalziel's insight:

Internet Archive is a new collection at Flickr where practitioners, and learners, can search through an archive of 2.6 million public domain images, all extracted from books, magazines and newspapers published over a 500 year period.
This new Flickr archive accomplishes something quite important, it concentrates on images.
How do you search through the archive? (It’s not entirely obvious)
From the home page of the archive, users can do a keyword search. As they’re filling in the keyword, Flickr will produce a dropdown which includes the words “Internet Archive Book Images’ Photostream.”
Users must make sure they click on those words, or else their search results will include images from other parts of Flickr.
NOTE: All images can be downloaded for free. They’re all public domain.
