The Faculties

The Faculties | technologies | Scoop.it

The Faculties are a new, free educational resource especially for those A-level students thinking about applying to University.

The website provides short films of university lecturers speaking on topics drawn from the A-level curriculum in Maths, English, Biology, Psychology, Chemistry and History. There are currently over 300 podcasts on the site, with more to follow.

The aim of The Faculties website is to encourage deeper learning, stretch and inspire learners and help them make a successful transition to university.

On 'The Faculties', the recordings are specially designed for the A-level classroom. All the topics have been provided by the major exam boards and by teachers and so consequently, they are more directly relevant to the A-level curriculum.

Videos are hosted directly on the site, and not pulled in from YouTube which should avoid filtering issues in some learning environments.

Videos can be downloaded, but only on request.

Videos can still be embedded into VLE’s etc, and linked to directly.

John Dalziel's insight:
One of the hurdles for Education Practitioners adopting Chromebooks in their Learning Environments is finding alternatives to software they previously used on their Windows or Mac desktops or laptops, or even their iPads.
The Chromebook App List is a mixture of Chrome extensions, Chrome Apps, and web-based tools that help drive productivity, production, and creativity.
All of the tools have been tested by the NCCE Tech-Savvy Team on both newer and older Chromebooks and are 100% compatible based on their experiences.
The intention is that this list will be a living document and will change and adapt over time.
NOTE: As with any list you find on the Internet (including my posts), users should research and carefully vet any suggested tool, before adopting them within their learning environments.
Well worth a look!

Resize your image online in three simple steps! Trouble mailing your images? Trouble putting your image online? Resize your images here; it's a free service.
John Dalziel's insight:
There are many times when education practitioners and/or learners want to reduce the pixels and/or overall size of an image for print, email and/or use in web sites, wikis and blogs.
There are many options available to do just that but...
Resize Your Image is definitely a very simple option and a useful one that should be added to your tech toolbox.
Resize Your Image allows users to upload an image, specify the desired dimensions and then download the resized image.
Resize Your Image also provides users with rotation and zooming tools as well as the option to save in one of three file formats: jpg, png and gif.
NOTE: Not only does Resize Your Image allow users to modify the size of an image (in pixels), the tool also reduces the size of the actual file itself.

FlipAnim - draw and create an animated GIF

FlipAnim - draw and create an animated GIF | technologies | Scoop.it
Create flipbook animations online!
John Dalziel's insight:
Flip Anim provides possibly the easiest way draw and create an animated GIF.
To create an animation on Flip Anim simply...
  - go to the website
  - start drawing on the notepad in the centre of the screen.
NOTE: Users can...
1: select different tools, and their size and colours, by using the "grid" icon at the bottom of the screen.
2: Load/save their project, alter page transparency, alter animation speed, zoom and/or Copy/paste a frame by using the "gear" icon at the bottom of the screen
Users can draw as much or as little as they like on each page of their notepad. They're essentially drawing a piece of each animation on each page of their notepad similar to the way that old cartoons were created.
When they're done drawing on all of their pages, they can preview the animation by pressing the play button.
To save their work they have to upload it to Flip Anim (registration is not required) then they can download it as an animated GIF.
Flip Anim can be a good tool for learners to use to create animated GIFs to illustrate short pieces of dialogue or to just create a simple gif to enhance their creative writing.
Go on, give it a try, you know you want to!
