Build a Body

Build a Body | technologies | Scoop.it

Spend a few minutes using the interactive Build a Body and it is easy to understand why it was given an award by the National Science Foundation.

Build a Body enables learners to construct a human body system-by-system.

Users drag and drop into place the organs and bones of a human body.

Each organ and bone is accompanied by a description of the purpose of that bone or organ.

Systems that learnerss can build are the...
     - skeletal,
     - digestive,
     - respiratory,
     - nervous,
     - excretory, and
     - circulatory systems.

A case study menu...
     - allows learners to read about diseases, disorders, and other concerns that affect the human body.
-provides short descriptions of concerns followed by a question that learners should be able to answer after completing the Build a Body activity.

Apps in the Classroom - a vetting process to help practitioners evaluate apps

Apps in the Classroom - a vetting process to help practitioners evaluate apps | technologies | Scoop.it
A free downloadable guide created by Apple to help Educational Practitioners make the best of iOS apps in their teaching
John Dalziel's insight:
My Facebook Page is mainly about Educational Apps and FiTES (Find, Try, Evaluate and Share)
However with more apps being designed and uploaded every single day, the iTunes App Store contains over 2 million apps.
There's a limit to how many I/we can review and it's no surprise that a large portion of these apps are education oriented covering a wide variety of subjects from learning a new language to virtually exploring the human body.
However, again no surprise, not all apps do what they claim to do and, even worse, some of them have internal bugs and errors that affect their overall performance and render them inappropriate for use with learners in their learning environments.
That's why practitioners need a vetting process to help them evaluate apps which they could use in their learning environments. "Apps in the Classroom" is a resource that will guide practitioners through this process.
Apps in The Classroom is a free downloadable guide created by Apple to help Educational Practitioners make the best of iOS apps in their teaching.
It provides teachers with guidelines and criteria to assist them with evaluating the suitability of apps.
The criteria cover four major areas...
► Developmental Appropriateness,
► Engagement,
► Instructional Design, and
► Motivation.
Each of these areas features a number of key questions practitioners should ask when selecting an app.
Those of you who are already qualified, and those of you currently training to become teachers, should read "Apps in Classroom" to learn more about how to appropriately select educational apps to use with your learners.

Read reviews, compare customer ratings, see screenshots and learn more about Classroom. Download Classroom and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
John Dalziel's insight:
Classroom is a free app introduced by Apple in 2016.
This app aims to help practitioners guide learners through a lesson, see their progress and keep them on track.
Classroom comes with a number of interesting features. Practitioners can use it to instantly launch apps, websites or even books on learners' devices.
They can also assign learners to the shared iPads they have recently worked on and logged them off when they are done.
Classroom provides users with smarter monitoring features so they can control what learners are doing on their iPads.
Users can lock learners’ devices into a single app or lock their screens.
They can also see what each learner is doing on their iPad or even view all learners' screens at once.
And, if practitioners use Apple TV in class, Classroom allows practitioners to display learners' work to everyone.
Alternatively, practitioners can use AirPlay to wireless project a learner’s screen to the class.
As for organisational features, Classroom enables users to arrange learners' devices into groups and break learners into different groups.
NOTE:  It ‘automatically creates groups of learners based on the apps they are using’.
It's worth checking out Classroom Guide at https://help.apple.com/classroom/ipad/1.0/#/ to learn more about this app.

Well practitioners can let their learners write a short essay with 5 of the new words learned, or start sessions by asking three of their learners what new word they have learned and get them to explain them to the other learners.

John Dalziel's insight:
Video is an important aspect of many blended learning environments; the question today is... "Have practitioners thought about where they have their learners access videos?"
Many educators have concerns, especially with younger learners about using YouTube and Vimeo Videos, but...
"Have they considered using SafeShare TV?"
SafeShareTV has been around for quite some time, but I have found that many practitioners have forgotten about it!
This is a great tool for removing the distractions that could appear when using YouTube or Vimeo without needing to download and convert videos.
Simply copy and paste the video's URL and SafeShare TV does the rest.
What does SafeShare do?

Dotstorming

Dotstorming | technologies | Scoop.it
Real time brainstorming and dot voting
John Dalziel's insight:
Dotstorming could be a good platform on which practitioners can host brainstorming sessions with their learners.
It could also be a good platform on which they gather learners' thoughts about a question or problem statement.
► Practitioners can create a space for people to post digital sticky notes; those notes can contain text and/or images and Links to Youtube videos
► Once the notes are posted practitioners can have learners vote for their favourite notes.
NOTE: As the creator of a Dotstorming space practitioners can restrict the number of votes that each learner can cast.
► After the voting is completed, practitioners can sort the notes according to the number of votes they received.
Alternatives include...
► posting a set of answer choices for learners and have them vote for the answer that they think is correct.
► Have Learners use the chat function in Dotstorming - this has to be added as many won't need it - to discuss the answer choices before, during, or after voting.
I'm sure there are many other uses as well.
