Pear Deck | technologies | Scoop.it

With Pear Deck, bring interactive, engaging slide presentations to your classroom. Real-time formative assessments and discussions enhance understanding and empower your students’ learning process.

John Dalziel's insight:

Pear Deck...
   - enables practitioners to take a PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or PDF and incorporate various learner activities to check for understanding and engagement.
   - is free for learners and practitioners (there is also a higher end, paid premium model);
   - fully integrates with Google Apps for Education.
Just...
   - sign up/in to a Pear Deck account,
   - create a new interactive lesson by selecting “New Deck.”
   - create a slideshow from scratch or import a PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or PDF.
Then go through and edit the slides incorporating...
   - free response (text),
   - free response (number), and
   - multiple choice questions
...within the slide.
NOTE: If users have the premium option (they offer a free 30 day trial) users can also use draggable features as well as freehand drawing for learners to demonstrate understanding, such as crafting an image, indicating a point on a map, and more.
All of this allows practitioners to do a quick check for understanding and/or have learners engage with the material as it's presented.

TubeChop allows you to easily chop a funny or interesting section from any YouTube video and share it.
John Dalziel's insight:

TubeChop is a good way to just show a snippet of a longer film or eliminate parts that may not be suitable to your audience.
TubeChop couldn’t be easier. Head to YouTube to grab the URL for your video. At the TubeChop page, just paste the URL and determine the start and end point of the clip you want to show; TubeChop provides a unique URL for showing or sharing. Take that embed code over to your PowerPoint presentation. On the ribbon, find the “Insert” tab and choose video. Select “Video from Web Site” and past the TubeChop embed code. A dynamic content box is pasted on your slide, which you can resize and move as you like.

Presentain - Present. Engage. Grow.

Presentain - Present. Engage. Grow. | technologies | Scoop.it
Presentain helps speakers engage and grow their audiences. You use smartphone as a clicker and audience can connect to your presentation using their devices. They can ask you questions, participate in polls, send you follow-up requests, share your slides and more. While you present Presentain records your voice so when the presentation is over you can publish the slidecast (presentation slides with voice-over) and start growing your online audience.
John Dalziel's insight:

The most exciting part of Presentain is its interactivity.
Viewers are given a pin to log in to the presentation on their device allowing them to interact.
They can view the slides on their device as you present them, and share any they like on their social networks.
They can also submit questions which users will see as a notification on their smartphone.
Users, practitioners or learners can create polls and multiple choice questions, viewing the responses in real time.
They can use their smart phone as a clicker, record the live presentation and share it later, and their audience can use Presentain to request a follow up action, such as to request a copy of the slides.
Drawbacks? Users currently can’t show embedded video in the presentations, and they can’t include animations or transitions. Presentation is compatible with either Google Slides or other slides converted to PDFs.

Thematic - Create your own scrolling visual stories!

Thematic - Create your own scrolling visual stories! | technologies | Scoop.it
Visit www.thematic.co to create your own free scrolling album to share with your friends.
John Dalziel's insight:

Thematic is designed for building and sharing visual stories, allowing users to display up to twenty pictures organized around a theme of their choosing.
After importing pictures users can add one line of text to each image in their story and rearrange the sequence in which their images appear on their screen.
The resulting story is displayed in a vertically scrolling format with each of the images occupying all of the available space within the browser.
Completed stories can be shared publicly or kept private.
Each public story can be shared via Twitter, Facebook, email, or embedding into a webpage.
I recommend importing high resolution images as smaller images will become pixelated when enlarged to Thematic's full size. After importing your pictures you can add text and rearrange the sequence in which your images appear on your screen.

Microsoft Office Online - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the web | technologies | Scoop.it
Collaborate for free with online versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote. Save documents, spreadsheets, and presentations online, in OneDrive. Share them with others and work together at the same time.
John Dalziel's insight:

Microsoft’s Office Online is a completely free, web-based version of Microsoft Office.

This online office suite is clearly competing with Google Drive, but it’s also a potential replacement for the desktop version of Office.
Unlike all of Microsoft’s other Office products, Office Online at office.com is completely free.
This is Office Online’s biggest advantage over desktop versions of Microsoft Office.

It  can be used on all the PCs you want without paying for additional boxed copies or subscribing to Office 365, Microsoft’s subscription service for Office.
Because it’s a web application that runs in your browser, Office Online will run on everything, from Linux PCs and Chromebooks to iPads and Android tablets.

It doesn't require any special plug-in and works in any popular browser, including Firefox, Chrome, and Safari — not just Internet Explorer.
Should you use Office Online?

Well, that’s up to you. If you’d like a completely free version of Office it’s a compelling option.

On the other hand, you may need the more advanced features in the desktop version of Office.
NOTE: it does provide access to learners who can't afford the desktop version of office.
