Map of Contemporaries

Map of Contemporaries | technologies | Scoop.it
The history of the world in famous people’s lifespans.
John Dalziel's insight:
Map of Contemporaries is an interactive visual that chronicles the history of the world through the lifespans of famous people.
For many of us, History is a giant collective tangle of thousands of interwoven stories involving millions of characters, countless chapters, and many, many narrators.
Map of Contemporaries provides a "Flipped History" resource where, rather than teaching history by highlighting the "major events", the Map of Contemporaries targets different historical figures and through them an overview of the major events that marked their era.
Different Educational Courses can use the Map of Contemporaries to search for famous people by content area (e.g., arts, music, religion, science…etc) and by their place of birth.
Once users locate the filtered historical figures, clicking on their name, provides access to Wikipedia pages with more details.
The Map of Contemporaries provides a fresh perspective on our history, unlike the conventional “vertical” approach of who came after whom and what happened after what.
NOTE: The timeline uses the data set from Pantheon, which is a project from the Macro Connections group at The MIT Media Lab.
They provide an excellent list of 15,343 historical figures each marked with a Historical Popularity Index (HPI) that helps us to show the most famous people at the top of the timeline.
Well worth a closer look, even if you don't teach History!
