Free GPS Navigation with Turn by Turn - Waze

Free GPS Navigation with Turn by Turn - Waze | technologies | Scoop.it
waze is a free mobile navigation application for your iphone or android that allows drivers to build and use live maps, real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation to improve their daily commute...
John Dalziel's insight:

Waze
- is a free app supported by most smartphone platforms,
- relies on a strong community to keep
   ...the maps updated and
...other users current on what is going on.
As such, Waze is an interesting hybrid of a map service and, a social network.
Users enter a destination and Waze tells them how to get there.
So what's the difference form othe apps?
Well Waze uses data collected from other users to give users the quickest possible route.
Other users, Wazers, check in and offer information on...
- slowed traffic,
- accidents,
- police,
- vehicles stopped on the side of the road,
...and more.
The app also senses if users are going slower than the posted speed limit in that area and asks the user if the traffic is heavy.
My only concern is the potential distraction of the driver; if car-sharing, a passenger can interact with the app.
