JellyBean Writer and JellyBean Scoop

JellyBean Writer and JellyBean Scoop | technologies | Scoop.it
JellyBeanScoop Autopub description
John Dalziel's insight:

Jellybean Writer and Jellybean Scoop could be good resources for ESOL/ESL/EFL functional skills etc. Learners could read (four reading levels) fun and interesting news stories on Jellybean Scoop then write their own stories about the topics covered in the articles they've read.
When writing, learners can...
   ▪ import pictures from their computers and
   ▪ write captions for each image.
A variety of layout templates, background colours, and fonts are available for them to use.
The resulting stories can be...

   ▪ saved online or

   ▪ downloaded and printed.
If practitioners feel that picture books are too simple for their learners, they can skip using pictures and select one of the text only templates for the pages in their books.
NOTE: 1: Users have to create an account to access the reading questions and writing tools on Jellybean Scoop. 2: Practitioners who create accounts for themselves can also create and manage accounts for their learners.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | technologies | Scoop.it
Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. www.chrome.com/spellup
John Dalziel's insight:

Spell Up is a new word game and Chrome Experiment that helps learners improve their English using their voice—and a modern browser, of course.
It’s like a virtual spelling bee, with a twist.
Spell Up is both fun and educational.
The goal of the game is for users to correctly spell the words they hear and stack them to build the highest word tower they can...
   - letter by letter,
   - word by word.
The higher the tower gets, the more difficult the word challenges:
They’ll be asked to...
   - pronounce words correctly,
   - solve word jumbles and
   - guess mystery words.

They can earn bonuses and coins to level up faster.

Spell Up works best in Chrome on a computer and on Android phones and tablets. (It also works on iPhones and iPads, but they’ll need to type rather than talk.)
Whether they’re just learning English or they’re already a pro, check it out!

And if you’re a practitioner, I'd encourage you to try it out in your learning environments.

SoundCloud - Share Your Sounds

Create, record and share the sounds recorded, with peers, practitioners etc., with SoundCloud, the world's largest community of sound creators.

Sound Cloud has many uses including languages courses.

Learners can record spoken tracks on Sound Cloud and share them their practitioner/teacher/assessor.

The practitioner/teacher/assessor uses the comment feature to provide feedback that is tied directly to each learner's recording.

The comments can be tied to the exact second at which a practitioner/teacher/assessor wishes to provide formative feedback.

Note:SoundCloud allows users to have up to two hours of recordings stored in their account at one time. After that they will need to either delete old recordings or upgrade to a paid plan.

JustTheWord

JustTheWord | technologies | Scoop.it

Just The Word collocations - helps users in writing English...

A collocation thesaurus concordancer that produces word clouds!

On the surface of it Just-the-Word looks just like any other online dictionary or thesaurus, but start using it and you will soon find that it's much more.

By the way Collocation is an arrangement or juxtaposition of words or other elements, especially those that commonly co-occur, i.e. rancid butter, bosom buddy, or dead serious and a concordancer is a computer program that automatically constructs a concordance.

Of course a concordance is an alphabetical list of the principal words used in a book or body of work, with their immediate contexts.

Ideal for Language, ESOL, EFL, ESL, etc. practitioners.

And there is more - click on a small button that says 'View in Wordle' and Just-the-Word will link through automatically to Wordle and create a word cloud of the most frequent collocations.

As a Physics and Maths Practitioner, this is all a bit beyond me but I'm assured it is an excellent tool.

A Fun Way to Learn a New Language

A Fun Way to Learn a New Language | technologies | Scoop.it

Lyrics Gaps aims to help users learn a language through songs; it could be a fun way for students to practice their listening skills and writing skills in the language that they are studying.

Each song has a few activities accompanying it. The activities ask learners to fill in the blanks in the songs with the correct word or words that are missing. Currently there are activities available in ten languages.

Registered users are encouraged to develop and contribute their own activities in the user community; LYRICSnMUSIC <http://www.lyricsnmusic.com/> may assist in this process.

Lyrics Gaps doesn't provide the most rigorous of activities, but make a nice break from traditional ESOL/EFL/ESL etc., language practice activities.

Imagistory - Creative Storytelling App for young learners

Imagistory - Creative Storytelling App for young learners | technologies | Scoop.it
Get Imagistory - Creative Storytelling App for Kids on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
John Dalziel's insight:

Imagistory is a creative storytelling app which uses wordless picture books.
The idea behind the wordless books is that youngsters get to be the storytellers, simply by using their imaginations to tell the story using the pictures, creating it as they go.
It's a new way for learners and parents/teachers to share a story together, ones which can be told a different way every time.
Imagistory helps...
   - foster creativity,
   - imagination and
   - to develop language and early literacy skills.
Youngsters are already natural storytellers, so help them discover this and unleash their storytelling potential!

Could also be used for ESOL, EFL, ESL and Modern Language learning.

Tellagami is an app that's gaining more and more popularity in learning environments with a fun and interactive take on creating animated videos.

Google Translate: Phrasebook

Le service Google gratuit de traduction en ligne permet de traduire instantanément du texte et des pages Web.
John Dalziel's insight:

Google has added a new feature for Google Translate called Phrasebook.
As the name suggests, Phrasebook can be used to save commonly used phrases.
This can be used, by learners (including ESOL/EFL/ESL etc.), as a language tool.
To begin with, Phrasebook will be empty, but learners can populate it with their phrases by clicking the star under a translation they’ve just made.
Now, even if they forget a word, they can click the Phrasebook icon above the upper-right corner of the box containing the translation to open their Phrasebook.
Select the word or phrase they want to use, loads it in the translation area with a click. They can filter phrases by language pair, or search for a specific phrase.
NOTE: The text-to-speech icons next to the phrases give them a vocal pronunciation.

Duolingo | Learn English, Spanish and German for free

With Duolingo users learn a language for free, and simultaneously translate the Web.

Users read, listen to, and translate words and phrases.

They are shown words with translations and can can hear the words pronounced too.

To practice they type and or speak translations.

Activities start out with simple words and phrases and as they become more proficient, Duolingo gives them more challenging phrases.

Duolingo also awards users points and virtual badges.

Before Language practitioners become too anoyed, I want to emphasise Duolingo won't replace in-person instruction, but it is a good site for learners to use to practice writing and speaking a new language. One for ESOL learners as well.
