Serious Internet Explorer flaw puts XP users especially at risk Engadget We hope that you heeded our advice to finally ditch Windows XP in favor of a more modern operating system, because there's a new security exploit that'll leave stubborn XP...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

Microsoft has already said it plans to roll out an IE security update for all modern versions of Windows, but if you're using XP, well, you're out of luck, as support for that 12-year-old OS ended a few weeks ago.

In the meantime, Microsoft suggests enabling Enhanced Protection Mode if you're using Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 for x64-based systems and all Windows 8 machines. Other workarounds include installing a free security tool called EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit), adjusting security settings to High and disabling Active Scripting. To get even more tips on how to get around the vulnerability before Microsoft rolls out the update, hit the source links below. Or just, you know, use another browser, at least for the time being.

How Scoop.it, Google Plus & Twitter can turn chaos into order

How Scoop.it, Google Plus & Twitter can turn chaos into order | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

If you do anything professionally related to online technology, you understand the immense amount of data you need to sort through each day. There are the daily content roundups, blogs to read, Facebook posts and to check, tweets to scroll through and news sites. That doesn’t include whatever else arrives in your in-box. I literally cannot keep up with all that I want to know about social media technology and its use for engagement, fundraising and advocacy. It’s really too much to know. That’s when I began trusting the curators.Trusting the curators was a strategy I employed to begin to figure out what to read, what I needed to read, and what others whom I trusted thought was important to read. We cannot read it all. We cannot begin to imagine trying to read it all. We must trust to the curators.Trusting others to curate content has become my primary means for gathering relevant information about social media and particularly nonprofit technology.

Astrotourism skyrockets in Chile

Astrotourism skyrockets in Chile | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

As dusk falls in the Elqui Valley, a packed minivan rumbles up a winding trail into the hills, high above the gleaming orange lights of Vicuna - a small town at the heart of Chile's recent boom in astrotourism.

After 40 minutes on the dusty road, lined with scrawny bushes, cacti and rocks, the van arrives at Pangue Observatory. Opened in 2008, it is one of about a dozen tourist observatories scattered around Chile's northern regions, which have some of the clearest skies in the world.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

A series of even more ambitious projects is coming to Chile in the next few years. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, a camera boasting 3,200 megapixels, will catalogue the entire visible sky and publish images online - allowing anyone with a computer to zoom through space and potentially make discoveries.

The Giant Magellan Telescope and the European Extremely Large Telescope will bring more groundbreaking technology and global prestige.

And Chile already has the $1-billion ALMA radio telescope, an array of 66 antennae in the Atacama Desert that probes the cosmic origins of life.

By 2020, the government estimates it will host 70% of the world's astronomical infrastructure.
