SnapChat Changes Name and Focus; Snap, Inc. Now a Digital Lifestyle Company - Brian Solis

SnapChat Changes Name and Focus; Snap, Inc. Now a Digital Lifestyle Company - Brian Solis | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

SnapChat officially changed its name to Snap, Inc. as the company restyles itself from a one-[major] hit app company into a digital lifestyle brand. To mark the occasion, Snap, Inc. introduced Spectacles, fashion and tech-forward sunglasses that record 10-second clips, which can then be uploaded to SnapChat Memories via wifi. Following the Apple playbook, Snap, Inc. also designed a fashionable case that doubles as a charger. Spectacles will be available this Fall and will cost $130.

Spectacles are the result of a secret acquisition in December 2014 of VergenceLabs, which developed Epiphany Eyewear to record video clips with the press of a button on the side of the frame and upload them online via its app. Over the last 19 months, Snap, Inc. remodeled Epiphany into a fun, but thoughtful sunglass package to give Snappers a way to share their perspective hands-free.

By pressing a small button on the side of the glasses, Spectacles capture video through a 115-degree lens, which better conveys someone’s natural perspective and field of vision. Those on the other side of the lens, will know they’re being recorded because of a halo-like light that surrounds the lens. Unlike smartphones, which record video in a rectangular format, video via Spectacles is circular, allowing the viewer to watch the content naturally, whether in portrait or landscape mode, the way the user “saw” it. Essentially, clips offer a playback experience that simulates your natural point of view....

8 Strategies to stand out when you're late to the content marketing game

8 Strategies to stand out when you're late to the content marketing game | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

You’ve all seen the data and it’s not pretty — the amount of information on the web is certainly overwhelming. Content budgets are soaring, content output is exploding. There are more than 1,000 blog posts and 400 hours of YouTube video uploaded every minute in a never-ending war for attention.

If you’re the first one to dominate a niche with  your content, you’re one of the lucky ones. You’re probably keeping a stranglehold on your leading position by publishing relevant, helpful, and interesting content on a consistent basis. In essence, you are creating Content Shock for your competitors — dominating a content niche so that Google juice flows in your direction.

But what if you’re on the losing end of the stick? What if you’re in a situation where your competitors have already loaded the web with content that dominates the search results?

Personally, I am facing this problem all the time now when I consult with companies. If they’re late to the content marketing game, they may feel paralyzed because the competition has such as head start. So I need to find new ways for them to compete.

I’ve thought this through, and I’ve come up with eight strategies to stand out for an organization that is late to the content game....

Here's why Facebook's new war on clickbait is so important

Here's why Facebook's new war on clickbait is so important | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

Facebook has tweaked its New Feed algorithm many, many times in its attempt to keep the posts you see relevant, but the change it’s rolling out today may be the most important one yet: Facebook is vowing to kill clickbait.

It’s a potentially huge move, and one that makes journalism better for almost everyone involved.

How it works

Now Facebook is filtering out clickbait much like Gmail hides spam. It’s detecting specific words, structures, and styles in titles which “intentionally leave out crucial information, forcing people to click to find the answer.”

Here are some Facebook-provided samples of titles you will be seeing a lot less of:

“When She Looked Under Her Couch Cushions And Saw THIS… I Was SHOCKED!”

“He Put Garlic In His Shoes Before Going To Bed And What Happens Next Is Hard To Believe”

“The Dog Barked At The Deliveryman And His Reaction Was Priceless.”...

Nokia Reaches Internet Speeds 1,000 Times Faster Than Google's Fiber | Sumit Passary | Tech Times | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

Nokia researchers have reached internet speeds of up to 1 Terabit per second, which is about 1,000 times faster than the speeds offered by one of the fastest internet service providers in the U.S.

Google Fiber offers broadband internet speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second. However, a joint research conducted by Nokia Bell Labs, the Technical University of Munich and Deutsche Telekom T-Labs claims to have achieved broadband speeds of 1 Tbps.

To put this in perspective, users will be able to download the entire Game of Thrones series in just one second in HD quality if 1 Tbps broadband internet speed is available.

The researchers will be showing off how such high speed is achieved over fiber connection with the help of a technique called Probabilistic Constellation Shaping, or PCS.

How to Take Screen Shots in iOS 10 | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
Have you noticed taking a screenshot is harder in iOS 10 and with iPhone 7? Maybe you tried to take a screen shot in iOS 10 only to discover that you either locked the device, sent it to the Home Screen, or summoned Siri instead? This is a fairly common occurrence when taking a screenshot with an iOS 10 device, whether it’s an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and has led some users to think that the mechanism for how to take a screenshot with iOS 10 was changed. Well, screenshots have not changed, but the sensitivity seems to be slightly different which requires a minor adjustment for some users to successfully capture screenshots in iOS 10.

LinkedIn is on a mission to change your mind.

"You may think of LinkedIn as primarily a site where people upload their digital résumé," the company notes in a new eBook. "But nine billion content impressions per week are delivered in the LinkedIn feed -- more than 15 times the job postings in the feed.

"These stats reveal that LinkedIn has become a destination where professionals consume high-quality content from professional publishers like The Wall Street Journal and The Economist, and even from peers who are sharing content in the feed."

Qualcomm warns on 5G network complexity | Kavit Majithia | Mobile World Live | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

Chip giant Qualcomm believes there are “incredibly complex” challenges facing the industry as it attempts to bring 5G technology to commercial reality.

Speaking at a media briefing in London earlier today, Ben Timmons (pictured), senior director – business development, Qualcomm Europe, hailed 5G as “more coherent” than either of the previous generations (3G and 4G), even though the standardisation process is at least two years away, and believes the development will prove a massive step forward from 4G, which really only gave us “the ability to deliver higher data rates”.

However, with so many elements to a 5G network, Timmons moved to dampen “some fairly grand statements” made about a 2018 or 2019 launch of the technology.

He believes players could come to market that have features of 5G in the timeframe, but not the full package.

Museums Embrace Digital

Museums Embrace Digital | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Getty Museum of Images and Vatican Library are three examples of prestigious institutions taking bold strides into the digitization of their various treasured inventories. The Met has recently made available via their website more than 400,000 works of art from their collection, ready for download. Works by Monet and Van Gogh, and hundreds of paintings, drawings, and sketches by Picasso are free for educational, noncommercial, and recreational use through its Open Access for Scholarly Content (OASC) portal (though you don’t need to be either an educator or full-time student to use it). The Vatican Library, in partnership with Japanese tech company NTT Data, has begun in March to digitize and catalog its millions of pages of historically significant manuscripts, some dating back to the 1300s, uploading them onto its site to be viewed by the public—a substantial, sensitive project to be carefully monitored and developed or the next few years. This serves a two-pronged solution for both Vatican librarians and intellectually curious citizens: the dissemination of education while still protecting valuable ancient texts. The Getty Research Institute and J. Paul Getty Museum have posted nearly 87,000 works of art and medieval manuscripts through their Open Content Program (including sixteenth-century prints) and plan to add many more in the near future. You can even print select works as magnificent posters!
