From Opera’s perspective as a business, I think they probably had to do this.

Google's patent application shows how its rankings (try to) favor larger incumbent original news publishers

Google's patent application shows how its rankings (try to) favor larger incumbent original news publishers | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

[...]

The first three metrics refer to “the number of articles produced … during a given time period, an average length of an article [and] the importance of coverage from the news source.” These favor large publishers, but they select for originality and focus as well.

Google is actually “counting the number of original sentences”

[...] The “breaking news score” is a metric of how quickly a publisher jumps on a story.

[...] The next three factors, usage patterns, human opinion and circulation statistics, are different ways of assessing popularity.

[...] In a further nod to “legacy media,” metrics eight and nine measure the number of individual bylines associated with a news source as well as the number of news bureaus. Unclear how much this will affect head counts at large publishers.

What do you think?

Did you ever wonder how Google decides who to put at the top of the list? Here is a bit of insight about that.

These conclusions are more straightforward thant the original Monday Note on the topic which concluded : "A closer look at Google’s patent for its news retrieval algorithm reveals a greater than expected emphasis on quality over quantity."

Curating curation topic on Scoop.it

Curating curation topic on Scoop.it | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

Content curation tools are designed to assist the process of searching, collating and sharing existing content. Content curation differs from simple content aggregation in that curators screen for the most relevant content, and often edit or comment it.   By curating content on a topic close to them, brands can position themselves as a go-to expert on that topic and embed their communication into the richer context of external content sources.

Content curation tools are multiplying like wild mushrooms. Category leaders, like Pinterest, tumblr and Scoop.it are growing impressively fast.

At the same time, other tools from social media, blogging and search, such as Twitter, Paper.li and Google are strengthening their curation functionality.

Observer (like me) are starting to make distinctions among subcategories like Search Curation (Topsy, Feedsquares), Video Curation (Magnify.net), Content Trends curation (Zemanta, Parse.ly), Corporate Curation (Curata, CurationSoft, Digimind), Content Relationships curation (Pearltrees, Mind.it).

The most popular category is Social Curation. Social Curation enables users to clip and publically share content (mostly pictures, graphics and video) in the form of attractive personalized mood boards (typical of Pinterest, Bundlr).

A more specialized form of Social content curation helps users turn twitter feeds into threaded stories (Storify, Dashter).

We can expect much of the Pinterest-style social curation to turn into Shopping Curation à la OpenSky.

We can also expect the debate about content curation and copyright infringment to continue to rage. Attribution to the original source should be a fundamental requirement of Content Curation. But it can be difficult when content is re-"pinned" again and again. Scoop.it is one of the best tools in terms of facilitating content attribution.

Why Google will crush Nielsen - The Guardian

The Guardian
Why Google will crush Nielsen
The Guardian
The web user is the most watched consumer ever. For tracking purposes, every large site drops literally dozens of cookies in the visitor's browser.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

We are providing our data and input for free and it is worth billions in certain hands. We also so far have very little to no power over how that data is used and do not have an easy way if any way to take it back or say no.

Excerpt:

" The Wall Street Journal found that each of the 50 largest websites in the United Sates, weighing 40% of the US page views, installed an average of 64 files on a user device. (See the WSJ's What They Know series and a Monday Note about tracking issues.) As for server logs, they record every page sent to the user and they tell with great accuracy which parts of a page collect most of the reader's attention.

But when it comes to measuring a digital viewer's commercial value, sites rely on old-fashioned panels, that is limited user population samples. Why?"

WeChat Officially Launches the Brand in India; Should Facebook, Whatsapp Be Afraid? | Enterprise | www.indiatimes.com

WeChat Officially Launches the Brand in India; Should Facebook, Whatsapp Be Afraid? | Enterprise | www.indiatimes.com | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
WeChats multiple features coupled with their strong marketing skills have made the app popular across different markets and helped soar the apps popularity.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is good article about some of the different social media and calling sites around the globe. Rutu Ladage shares details about WeChat, a Chinese start up that is moving fast but in doing so explains others that are popular as well.

Those that travel will find this useful it reveals sites that may offer better deals than the home country phone and data plans with international added that is normally a very bad, costly, use at your own risk of being left penniless idea.

There is a question that screams as we realize how paranoid China and many other nations including the USA are about any Internet use that the leadership does not feel they have total control over.  Will the Chinese startup WeChat be used by China to ease drop and spy on users and will other nation use their wireless communication services to do this as well? Interesting how paranoid behavior and mind set is contagious, but if someone thinks they can't trust people without having been given a good reason not to than only appropriate reaction is to assume those that wrongly or unjustly accuse others cannot be trusted. Even if they do all of it in the name of national fear it begs those same doubts be returned.

Excerpt:

The app has already become the number one app in most emerging markets in South East Asia. WeChat which entered the Indian market last year experimented with features across different audiences. Developed by Tencent, the Chinese application provider, WeChat grew exponentially in the space of just one year, far quicker than Facebook or Twitter.

The appeal of WeChat is not just the messenger app. The app packs a host of other features. It’s a mini-social networking site coupled with a messenger app. WeChat launched the platform for users in India but also offers a promotional platform to brands. Just like Facebook and Twitter, brands can use the app to interact with fans and build a follower-base.

Debut for thermal invisibility cloak

Debut for thermal invisibility cloak | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
Researchers build and test the first prototype of a "thermal invisibility cloak", which can hide objects from heat flow.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

"The technology could be put to use in thermal management in electronics.

The theoretical ideas behind the prototype were outlined in a paper by French researchers in 2012 - now made real in copper and a silicone material called PDMS.

It works by channelling heat flow around the central region, with carefully designed, alternating rings made of the two materials.

The team took thermal images of the "cloak" as heat transferred across it"

Late last year, Madeleine spoke to Chevon Hicks, president of the digital ad agency Heavenspot and adjunct professor at USC. He laid out what students in the U.S.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Most students today already own a lot of technology. Why not allow the use of that? They know their tech and what is loaded onto it. Parents could install protections as well as most schools then they and students could assume proper use of them.... which in the end is who has to employ proper control and use anyway so why not train it and let it happen in learning environments.

The technology goes out of date and schools often lag behind on updates for so much equipment while more up to date stuff sits at home or in a back pocket wasting personal income by not being accessible.

gdecugis's comment, May 2, 11:51 PM
I wanted to give you a follow-up update on the spam issues some of you reported these past few days.

Might be a sign of success but we did effectively get a lot more spammers than we used to. The problem we had was repeat spam from single accounts and different than what we had before. These accounts were created manually by humans (not bots) and exploited the comment or suggestion system to spam repeatedly at a very high rate a few number of successful topics (so including a lot of yours).

Today, we launched a radically new system to fight that. Most of this is backend and on our end and it still relies on our community deleting spam comments or suggestions and most importantly helping us identify spammers by checking the "mark as spam" option. What happens following that is totally new and though you won't see it as behind the scenes, we feel pretty good it's going to be much more efficient for the whole community.

Thanks again for having helped us understand the intensity of the problem and sorry you had to suffer from it. We're committed to keep Scoop.it free of spam and we're grateful to count on your support for that.
