Google’s programming language, Go, gets a big speed boost | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
Google's Go hits version 1.1, now goes 30 to 40 percent faster.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Tech innovators and developers should find this worth checking out.

Excerpt:

"We have made optimizations in the compiler and linker, garbage collector, goroutine scheduler, map implementation, and parts of the standard library," Google engineer Andrew Gerrand wrote on the Go blog yesterday. "It is likely that your Go code will run noticeably faster when built with Go 1.1." Go 1.1 is compatible with Go 1.0, so all users should upgrade.

Why Is Science Behind A Paywall? Gizmodo Australia Advocates of “open science” argue that the current model of science, developed in the 1600s, needs to change and take full advantage of the Internet to share research and collaborate in the...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Many models for all types of things seem to not fit well any more. The things we place profitable value on like plastic objects are sold and valued while water, which we cannot live without seems worthless until we put it in a plastic bottle that contaminates and waste a lot of water.

Putting knowledge behind a pay wall in these times is highly offensive as well. Having said that I believe we all feel it critical to reward creative thinkers for their design and ideas. How to we change what we do to meet the needs of today and still provide our creative innovators a healthy living.

Researchers develop metamaterials able to control spread of light

Researchers develop metamaterials able to control spread of light | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
(Phys.org) —A team of researchers at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology has developed a new class of metamaterials that allow for control of the spread of light in communications devices.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

Current electronic components used in communications technology are considered by most in the field to be bulky compared to other types of equipment. Also, engineers find it difficult to integrate such devices with typical microelectronic circuitry. For that reason, scientists have been looking for ways to change the way such devices are designed and built. In this new effort, the team from Israel has created a class of metamaterials that control the way light spreads, paving the way for entirely new types of communications devices.

WeChat Officially Launches the Brand in India; Should Facebook, Whatsapp Be Afraid? | Enterprise | www.indiatimes.com

WeChat Officially Launches the Brand in India; Should Facebook, Whatsapp Be Afraid? | Enterprise | www.indiatimes.com | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
WeChats multiple features coupled with their strong marketing skills have made the app popular across different markets and helped soar the apps popularity.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is good article about some of the different social media and calling sites around the globe. Rutu Ladage shares details about WeChat, a Chinese start up that is moving fast but in doing so explains others that are popular as well.

Those that travel will find this useful it reveals sites that may offer better deals than the home country phone and data plans with international added that is normally a very bad, costly, use at your own risk of being left penniless idea.

There is a question that screams as we realize how paranoid China and many other nations including the USA are about any Internet use that the leadership does not feel they have total control over.  Will the Chinese startup WeChat be used by China to ease drop and spy on users and will other nation use their wireless communication services to do this as well? Interesting how paranoid behavior and mind set is contagious, but if someone thinks they can't trust people without having been given a good reason not to than only appropriate reaction is to assume those that wrongly or unjustly accuse others cannot be trusted. Even if they do all of it in the name of national fear it begs those same doubts be returned.

Excerpt:

The app has already become the number one app in most emerging markets in South East Asia. WeChat which entered the Indian market last year experimented with features across different audiences. Developed by Tencent, the Chinese application provider, WeChat grew exponentially in the space of just one year, far quicker than Facebook or Twitter.

The appeal of WeChat is not just the messenger app. The app packs a host of other features. It’s a mini-social networking site coupled with a messenger app. WeChat launched the platform for users in India but also offers a promotional platform to brands. Just like Facebook and Twitter, brands can use the app to interact with fans and build a follower-base.

Debut for thermal invisibility cloak

Debut for thermal invisibility cloak | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
Researchers build and test the first prototype of a "thermal invisibility cloak", which can hide objects from heat flow.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

"The technology could be put to use in thermal management in electronics.

The theoretical ideas behind the prototype were outlined in a paper by French researchers in 2012 - now made real in copper and a silicone material called PDMS.

It works by channelling heat flow around the central region, with carefully designed, alternating rings made of the two materials.

The team took thermal images of the "cloak" as heat transferred across it"

Early Education and DIY May Be Keys to Success in Digital Technology
KCET
Late last year, Madeleine spoke to Chevon Hicks, president of the digital ad agency Heavenspot and adjunct professor at USC. He laid out what students in the U.S.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Most students today already own a lot of technology. Why not allow the use of that? They know their tech and what is loaded onto it. Parents could install protections as well as most schools then they and students could assume proper use of them.... which in the end is who has to employ proper control and use anyway so why not train it and let it happen in learning environments.

The technology goes out of date and schools often lag behind on updates for so much equipment while more up to date stuff sits at home or in a back pocket wasting personal income by not being accessible.

» Sandia gets aggressive in licensing technology | ABQ Journal | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

A new cooling technology built by Sandia National Laboratories is becoming one hot item in the computing and electronics industries.

The small, rotorlike device, dubbed the “Sandia Cooler,” has specially designed fins that push heat away through centrifugal force as the device spins. Sandia scientists say it can offer up to a tenfold improvement over today’s energy-intensive methods to reduce heat in computer processors and microelectronics.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

“It’s a new strategy,” said Jackie Kerby Moore, Sandia’s manager of technology and economic development. “Every few months we plan to announce ‘hot technologies’ that are ready to sign, and then meet with investors to discuss them.”

Those efforts are the latest in a host of measures to accelerate technology transfer under lab Director Paul Hommert, who took office in 2010.

Under Hommert, the lab has developed an entirely new approach to commercializing lab inventions by incorporating a market orientation into the earliest stages of research, rather than later in the development process.
