Solar Impulse gets funding boost for round-the-world plan

Solar Impulse gets funding boost for round-the-world plan | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it

Solar Impulse, the solar-powered aircraft project, received a boost to its bid to fly round the world in 2015 using only solar power thanks to an increased financial commitment from Bayer MaterialScience.

Bayer, an official partner whose contribution to date includes work by about 30 engineers to develop many of the ultra-lightweight materials that have resulted in an aircraft with the wingspan of an A320 but the mass of a family car, will continue its technical support as well as provide more cash, it announced on 28 September.

10 Amazing Social Media Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC]

10 Amazing Social Media Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC] | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it
Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby?

What if I said that almost a quarter (23 percent) of Facebook users check their account five or more times each day, Twitter users are 33 percent more likely to be Democrats or – sorry Foursquare – that 74 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of ‘checking in’.

These, and several other amazing social media statistics, can be found in the infographic on social media statistics...

Theatre proves to be a universal language

French and English productions enter a cultural exchange

How are the two solitudes being bridged in the Montreal theatre world?

Let me count the ways.

Several English-language theatre companies are producing plays by francophones this season: Centaur Theatre has just launched August, An Afternoon in the Country, by Jean Marc Dalpé, translated by Maureen Labonté, and Talisman Theatre is about to present The Medea Effect, by Suzie Bastien, translated by Nadine Desrochers. In the spring, Imago Theatre will present (at Centaur) the Quebec English premiere of Thinking of Yu, by Carole Fréchette, translated by John Murrell.

Meanwhile, an atmospheric production of Morris Panych’s The Dishwashers is playing (as Les Dishwasheurs) in St. Henri thanks to Momentum, a francophone company. And Théâtre de la Manufacture recently presented two English-Canadian plays at La Licorne: a Mansel Robinson work titled II (Deux), translated into French by Dalpé, and the French debut of Porte Parole’s Seeds, by Annabel Soutar, translated by Fanny Britt as Grain(s).

Infrared technology offers faster wireless data transfer than Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Infrared technology offers faster wireless data transfer than Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it

Posted by Darren Quick on October 2, 2012

Original image: Fraunhofer IPMS/Jürgen Lösel

"Back around the turn of the century, infrared ports for wireless data transfer over short distances were commonplace on many mobile devices. But it wasn't long before infrared communication technology was kicked to the curb in favor of the more versatile radio-based Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies. Fraunhofer researchers are looking to resurrect infrared wireless data transfer technology with the development of a “multi-gigabit communication module” that can wirelessly transfer data 46 times faster than Wi-Fi and 1,430 times faster than Bluetooth.

The new infrared module developed by Frank Deicke, a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) in Dresden, boasts a data transfer rate of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), making it not only significantly faster than conventional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technologies, but also six times faster than a wired USB 2.0 connection."

Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 USM IS - Full Format Review / Test

Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 USM IS - Full Format Review / Test | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it

The (old) Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 is a relic of the earliest days of EOS. This year it celebrated its 25th(!) year in production which is nothing short of amazing for an AF lens. However, 2012 is finally also the year of its successor - the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 USM IS. As you may notice the focal length and speed remained the same but Canon added a modern USM (Ultrasonic) AF as well as an image stabilizer. While USM is not really a killer argument (the micro-motor AF drive was fast enough after all), the IS certainly widens its usage scope specifically with respect to low light photography. As such it is an obvious choice e.g. for street or indoor photography. Given its focal length and speed it certainly faces stiff competition from the zoom lens gang here but some users may prefer to have a smaller and more light-weight option here.

Q&A with Panasonic: The story behind the new video-centric GH3 and other compact system camera tech advances, by Dave Etchells | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it

Posted by Dave Etchells on September 28, 2012

"During Photokina 2012, Imaging Resource's founder and publisher Dave Etchells interviewed five senior executives from Panasonic about the company's latest technologies and cameras, especially the newly released, single-lens mirrorless GH3.

The panel of executives from Panasonic Corporation included:

Michiharu Uematsu, Special Adviser, Merchandising Group, Imaging Network 1 Business Unit, Imaging Business Group, AVC Networks Company
Yoshiyuki Inoue, Senior Engineering Planner, Merchandising Group/Marketing Planning Team, Imaging Network 1 Business Unit, Imaging Business Group, AVC Networks Company
Masanori Kouyama, Senior Coordinator, System Camera Planning Team, Product Planning Group
Takeshi Kuraku, Manager, Marketing, Team for Americas, Network Products Group, Digital Imaging
Takashi Mori, Councilor, Communications Team, Communications Group, AVC Marketing Division, Global Consumer Marketing Sector

Please note that because it was an open, free-flowing panel discussion and we couldn't be 100% certain of accurately attributing the answers to each executive, we've simply attributed the answers to Panasonic as a whole."

"Loom" 4K short film Now Online. From Luke Scott, Ridley Scott & RED

"Loom" 4K short film Now Online. From Luke Scott, Ridley Scott & RED | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it

Posted by Alexandros Maragos on September 26, 2012

"Loom was written and directed by Luke Scott, son of Ridley Scott and nephew of Tony. It features Giovanni Ribisi and Jellybean Howie. Cinematography by the great Dariusz Wolski, ASC. The gorgeous dark short film is a cooperation of RSA Films and RED.

Loom was shot on RED Epic in 4K 3D in the tone and style of Ridley Scott's dystopian Blade Runner to showcase the prototype 4K REDray 3D laser cinema projector. The piece was crafted to test the limits of the colour range and exposure, allowing viewers to see fine details even in extremely low light scenes.

RED initially presented Loom at the 2012 NAB Show on April 2012 and recently President Jarred Land released it online via Reduser, the company's forum."

For those who haven’t used it (or who have turned the feature off), the Google+ app for Android and iOS automatically uploads photos and video you capture with your phone and tablet to a private album. From there you can share it easily, either publicly or to specific circles you’ve set up; or, as I’ve been doing, you can keep it private but use it as a simple way to keep track of information.

Google Authorship Confirms: Additional link After Hitting Back Button

Google Authorship Confirms: Additional link After Hitting Back Button | Technical & Social News | Scoop.it

If users point backs to the search results after reading the author tagged article for a certain period of time, Google will add three more additional links to similar articles referring to the same author below the clicked link.  If the user clicks on the search results with author tagged, and after reading a post on a site, he hits back button to return to the Google SERP (Search Engine Result Page), then the original result will show several extended links referring to other content by the same author. But result only triggers if user stayed on the page for some amount of time. Google will add a new “More by Author Name” indicating three more additional links to the article. Refer to Snapshot below:

Authorship Before

Authorship After

If user makes use of back button very quickly or go back to the search result page fast then no extra links will appear, as Google is measuring the time that the user spares on reading that article, if Google thinks that you enjoyed reading the article or was informative then only it will show up extra links. In this case, engagement is measured in the amount of time user spends on that piece of content. This also confirms that creating content that actually engages people and gets read will be an important factor in AuthorRank, as Google obviously wants to show more results from the same author in that event.

Google did, though, confirm that this is part of the authorship feature:

If a user visits an article by an author and it seems like they’d be interested in finding more articles by this author, when they click the “Back” button to return to the results page, we’ll show more results by that author. His article is highly recommended reading.
