The Bruce Lee Guide to Strategic Content

The Bruce Lee Guide to Strategic Content | M-learning, E-Learning, and Technical Communications | Scoop.it
Missed my presentation at the Pubcon regional in Austin? Here is a complete break down of "The Bruce Lee Guide to Strategic Content" for your enjoyment.
Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

Thanks to @sharonburton for finding this. As a retired martial artist myself (Black Belt in Taekwondo) who works with content strategy, the title of this article alone intrigued me. It's a good article that lays it all out, on the best way to have good form and maintain a zen-like attitude in the face of adversity.

Should their roles be autonomous, identical or interconnected? Experiences vary, but let’s see at what level they actually coincide.
Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

The talented Mr. Pappas--who is a driving force in the e-learning field himself--writes a very good article here about the differences between an ID and an SME, and where these two roles connect...or not. It's definitely worth reading.

Barack Obama, Editor

Barack Obama, Editor | M-learning, E-Learning, and Technical Communications | Scoop.it
If the politics business hadn't worked out for Obama, the path he might have chosen
Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

This is an interesting article, politics aside, that I found through a Google Plus connection. I can appreciate what the writer is saying about Obama as an editor, as I find myself being more of an editor as well at times. I'll read something and say to myself, "No, that's not quite right. That doesn't flow well enough..." I've often commented to my husband that my lost calling in life was to be a White House speechwriter. The spark was started during my latter years in university when my mentor and favorite professor was being denied tenure. A group of us wrote quite the petition and got many signatures. Alas, the campaign was lost, but it taught me how to craft words in a way I hadn't tried before. What was best about it was that it was outside of the classroom. I knew no rules...I just helped to create. I still pull out a copy of that petition to the Dean that I wrote with my friends. Dang, we did some really great writing back then. It helps put some perspective in our writing as a whole. I do feel that if you can't edit, you can't write. My son has a hard time writing. I often have to have him dictate his ideas to me to type, and then he works diligently at the editing, remolding the words to fit how he sees that they should be. He's pretty good for a 6th grader!

In between writing this or that, take some time to edit, if you haven't for a while. You'll be surprised how much you learn.

Are words overrated? Can wordless videos demonstrate how to perform a task? Easy to understand. Cheap to produce. Universally accessible.
Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

Another fantastic article by Ms. Swisher, my fellow knitting junkie. We have gone yarn shopping together, after all. She and I even bought the same yarn, albeit in different gauges. But I digress...I learned a lot of my knitting techniques by watching video as well. My husband learns how to do a lot of DIY projects around the house and car repairs by way of YouTube videos. I think she makes some excellent points here that are worth sharing.

Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

In my never ending quest to speak and write in "international English", here is a great article about some commonly used expressions used on both sides of the pond--not just in Britain--that are misused very often. Misused enough that it irks me! (Although, I think I may have misused just one myself, but not horribly.) Take note!

Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

Excellent find by @contentinsight. It really is the essence of what content strategy is about, and it's what I try to convey to my clients when assessing their websites in the process of "remodeling." It seems pretty common sense stuff, but you'd be surprised how often these basics aren't followed.

Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

Val Swisher has done it again! She has taken the concept of content strategy and structured content to a new level of understanding by continuing with the analogy she started a while ago with the idea of content architecture being similar to organizing your closet. I highly encourage that you read this article, as Val simplifies and explains this SO well.

A First-Timer's Summit: A Road Not Taken

a first-timer’s summit
Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

This is the third post of my series for the STC Notebook about the upcoming 2013 STC Summit.

Just as a ETA, I was told after the article was published that one of the benefits included in the Summit is that a disk with all the lecture slides and audio recordings of the lectures are given to all the participants, so I won't have to worry if two seminars I want to go to are given at the same time. Woo hoo! And yet, I'll still have to decide which one to go to, and which one to retrieve from the disk later...

Enjoy this latest installment.

Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

This is one to check out--it's even interactive! This is a great inforgraphic about how mobile is becoming so much a part of the digital landscape now. It's not stopping, but it's growing and expanding! This is important concept to understand in tech comm. Technical communicators are going to be important "landscape designers," if you will, going forward in helping to shape this new digital landscape, and learning to adopt methods of writing, content managing and creating for mobile solutions will be an imperative.

Danielle M. Villegas's insight:

As always, my m-learning mentor, RJ Jacquez, is on the cutting edge again (no pun intended, since he's using a hockey analogy in his post). I've seen this issue crop up at several places where I've either worked or interviewed. Mobile--whether it's for e-learning or otherwise--is just not on corporate radar, and it really should be! Companies that aren't looking at mobile will be falling behind soon enough, if they aren't falling behind already. Mobile is taking over, and it's really important to try to stay ahead of the game instead of trying to catch up.
