It’s never too late to plan a party. Tomorrow is National ESIGN Day, intended to commemorate, celebrate, and encourage the use of electronic signatures.

This is something I saw on Google+. I am someone who loves the idea of e-signatures. It really does speed up the process. Since I have a lousy printer and a bad scanner (I usually have to use my smartphone to scan instead), e-signing is just logical. I think part of the issue is that people think that an "ink" signature--something that denotes actual handwriting does two things. First, it shows some sort of proof that theoretically the signer has actually read what they are signing. Second, a signature shows some sort of authenticity that it's an actual person that is acknowledging the document. Let me tell you, most people have scribbles for signatures, and in some cases, others write the signature on their behalf. That's been done for decade before e-signatures were done. I've created a jpg of my signature, so I can use my actual signature electronically without having to print, sign, and scan again. Not everyone does this.

Trey Robinson, a LinkedIn connection, posted this fabulous Barry Feldman article that was featured in Social Media today. I've read a few of Barry's articles before, and this concept of creating the customer comfort zone is something that he obviously knows how to do very well himself.  This is something that I'm constantly aspiring to be able to do. I think I have created the comfort zone, but I think there are cleaner, crisper, clearer ways to do it, and it looks like our pal Barry has outlined for us how to approach that in this article. 

 

Take a look. This is important not only in marketing, but in creating any kind of content, really. If an end user is looking through a manual of a complicated product, don't they want to know that by reading the instructions, they are in good hands and that they will be able to accomplish their task easily with the help of those instructions? Of course. It's the responsibility of any writer to do that. Again, all these tips can take you far no matter how you are approaching the content.

As a (slowly) emerging presenter, I think this article presents several points that can definitely help in being engaged with your audience--whether one or many. The thing that struck me, though, was that these are things I think I've learned the hard way because of my Asperger's Syndrome. Many who are high-functioning autistic learn how to communicate in exactly this way--learning to take turns, listen, etc. They can't read the visual cues anyway (which makes working through the internet a lot easier for us since we are used to it anyway), so these are all steps that we have to learn over time to use in order to effectively communicate with the outside world. Think about that for a moment.

While I am a one-person content machine for TechCommGeekMom, I have been part of content teams for other companies, and I think the results that Colleen's team got--especially with the last point made in the article--are completely on point based on my own experiences.  There are some good insights here worth taking into consideration.

This is a big deal! FINALLY! I was always hesitant about Windows 8. I don't know--something in me didn't feel right about adopting it, and I was right. It had all sorts of problems that have slowly been sorted out. Windows 10 seems to be the big fix to it all, and a fresh start for Windows again! I think my faith in Microsoft is returning slowly but surely. I just bought a new laptop, so I'll be anxious to adapt to Windows 8.1, then 10 within the next two months!

I really enjoyed Joe Pulizzi’s keynote at the Intelligent Content Conference last year. It is called “Unlocking Your Content’s Potential,” and you can see it on Slideshare here. Val Swisher wrote this great article about content reuse--or lack thereof--in content marketing. To be honest, she makes excellent points here as to why isn't not happening, and I agree. I think a big part of it is actually more to do with the fact that many corporations are just not mentally there or at that kind of thinking yet. I think they are still adapting to the idea of getting their localization in order, and understanding how to use tools that create for mobile or responsive design. Heck, I think they are still trying to figure out how to write for mobile, still!

Mark Schaefer has written another insightful article about the impact of technology on blogs. Say it ain't so, Mark! While huge strides are being made with natural language processing, and as Mark says in the article, there are always new tools that come out to help us with improving our writing, hopefully machines won't completely replace actual writers over time. There is something about the human element that makes it all personal. After all, I don't think a machine can talk about personal experiences the same way that a human can, now can it?

Following my continual interest in other languages (but having mastered none), Larry Kunz offers a cool story about his own experiences dealing with another language other than English during his travels. His language interpretation skills for Swedish are obviously better than my attempts to understand any Gaelic/Irish!

Thanks to Tina Howe for posting this article on LinkedIn. I admit, I was an avid user of AOL at one time, becoming a subscriber in the early-to-mid-1990s. Although he does not like me saying this, I actually initially met my husband on AOL, and we both stayed subscribers for a little while after we got married. AOL was revolutionary in many ways, making online services accessible and focused on content, if you think about it. They wanted to be the one-stop for all your needs, and for a while, they were! I know we all hated getting those many installation disks in the mail, magazines, and almost everywhere to the point that the CDs and disks were used as drink coasters.  But this article, written by another one of those Steves who helped to revolutionize how we use the Internet--Steve Case, who helped start AOL, is a great look at where we've been, and where we are going.
