This is a graphic example for the article, but the site is a cybersafety site in the UK and has lots of information for parents about online safety for their children. It also tests their knowledge.

Rachael Johnston's curator insight, October 20, 2014 10:53 PM

It is important to build your own brand and to promote yourself positively. You want to be polite to other users and make sure you have nothing on your profile that could be damaging to your reputation. This includes swear words, inappropriate or rude comments, and pictures and videos of drinking or drugs.  This is really important for graduating students who, most likely, need to go through and delete pictures that have been tagged in one Facebook

Make sure you give credit to others if you share something of theirs. Also make sure you are writing your own posts and not just sharing others. However, make sure you are posting valuable and relevant information. Listen and think before you write and make sure you are using proper english.

It is okay to have debates on social netowrks with other users, everybody has the right ti voice their opinion, but don't let things get too personal or nasty.

It is also essential to understand that there are also hings to be very careful of when using social networks. For one, people are not always who they seem. You should also make sure you do not assume a false identity. It is important to keep some kind of professionalism, but don't change yourself or hide who you really are.

You must also make sure you are abiding by the rules of the network and report others who dont.

Last but certainly not least, be very careful about who you share things with. There are certain places to share certain things. For example, you may post something bout your personal life in your Facebook status, but it is not appropriate to do so on your LinkedIn profile. Do not share pictures and videos with strangers, you never know how they will use these.

Patricia Daniels's curator insight, August 30, 2013 3:37 AM

A useful video tutorial here, just over 16 minutes long. It runs through the basics of using Google drive and how you can use it to collaborate with others. It also touches on Google Hangout.

I use Google Drive with my students as a writing space because I teach English via Skype. It suits our needs perfectly. Students create several folders e.g. some are homework spaces; collaborative areas such as wikis; creative writing pages and as a virtual space that we can jump into during the lesson to work on activities. It works for us. As a teacher I can dip into shared spaces at any time and guide and support learning which is a real advantage.

flea palmer's curator insight, August 30, 2013 6:56 AM

This is a really thorough tutorial and very timely as I'm currently exploring using Google Drive with students. Our dispersed team of Learning Technologists already use it for collaboration but there is not much use as yet by our academics and students. The ability to be able to integrate Drive with Google Hangouts is really powerful and has the potential to be a great tool for supporting Distance Learning.

No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait

Digital literacy is about more than just adding technology into the teaching we already do. The following common teaching practices that we have seen in classrooms as researchers and as parents of school-age children do not help develop digital literacy and may even kill students’ motivation to develop their savvy use of technology and the Internet. We must stop these practices. Immediately.

Bonnie I agree parents are important today so many seem to be tuned out to the needs of there children, it is a lot more than just material needs, that parents need to provide, and with the prevalence of single parent homes, it is even harder. I feel as much for the parent of these homes as I do for the children it can not be easy wearing all the hats.

Books to Have and to Hold

Books to Have and to Hold | TechLib | Scoop.it
The books on our shelves continue to speak to us, unlike ephemeral e-books.
Bronwyn Desjardins's insight:
"This may seem like a trivial difference, but that’s not how it feels. Reading is inherently ephemeral, but it feels less so when you’re making your way through a physical book, which persists when you’ve finished it. It is a monument to the activity of reading. It makes this imaginary activity entirely substantial. But the quiddity of e-reading is that it effaces itself."

Digital Experiences and Expectations of Tomorrow’s Teachers

Digital Experiences and Expectations of Tomorrow’s Teachers | TechLib | Scoop.it

This new report, “Learning in the 21st Century: Digital Experiences and Expectations of Tomorrow’s Teachers,” is the latest in the series and provides new insights that will inform college and university based teacher preparation programs as well as the induction and professional development processes within K-12 schools and districts. Tomorrow’s teachers may have the keys to finally unlock the potential of technology to transform teaching and learning, but much depends upon their experiences in their preparation program and how well future school leadership can support their expectations for essential technology tools and resources.
