Colene Hardy's insight:

Video game creation is so exciting isn't it? I'm looking for a tool to use in my new Innovation Club. We want to be able to create video games, create apps, learn coding, compete in STEM competitions, etc. Maybe I should be calling it 21st Century Club. Anyways, this looks promising. I'll be checking out Stencyl too!

Some of the tech world's biggest successes began coding early. Here's how to get your kid on that track — for free!
Colene Hardy's insight:

Coding - in demand, great money, great places to work. I recently read an article on why every child over 8 should learn to code. I'm in agreement. I've played with some of these tools already. Excited to try out Tynker this summer with 3rd through 8th graders. Will be taking a closer look at a few others too!

Colene Hardy's insight:

Great stuff. I'm already in love with Animoto. After reading this, I'm particularly excited about Narrable. My world language teacher like having their students create stories and then record their stories on their own pages. VoiceThread has worked well for this, but Narrable sounds like another good choice.

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom | Tech Tools for Teachers (and anyone else who likes to create fun stuff on the web) | Scoop.it
Touch-screen tablets for young students have become all the rage. Some districts are even buying iPads for every kindergartner, a move sparking both celebration and consternation.
Colene Hardy's insight:

I went to a conference and attended a few workshops on iPads. When the presenters showed us the endless drill apps out there for their kids to practice on the ipad, I had to struggle to not roll my eyes (not really, I'm not an eye roller). There are a variety of ways for students to create, collaborate and show what they know on these ipads and we want them to practice math facts? I'm so much more impressed with making screencasts, movies, podcasts, animations and presentations. And I think the kids are too.

This year's FETC's technology smackdown offered plenty of free and cheap gadgets and services that imaginative teachers will have fun with in the classroom.
Colene Hardy's insight:

I've heard of a couple of these, but most of them are new to me. Especially the hardware pieces. I'm extremely curious to see how "a keyboard of light" works. If I can't feel the keys when they go down, that might be really weird. But I suppose we can all adjust to pretty much anything.

Create A Graph

Colene Hardy's insight:

I've been really interested in infographics the last couple of weeks. The infographic maker one of my teachers was using was wonderful in so many ways (infogr.am), but it is in Beta stage right now and some of the graphs are a little glitchy. Bring in "Create a Graph" where students can make graphs, download them and finally, upload them onto their infographic.

Colene Hardy's insight:

Recently I read an excerpt by Howard Gardner called "Five Minds for the Future." I have always loved his ideas on intelligence. The five minds he discusses are similar to those Carroll mentions in this article. The Disciplined Mind, the Synthesizing Mind, the Creating Mind, the Respectful Mind and the Ethical Mind. He also says that all of these minds have to work together in order to form a civic minded, life-long learner.

Why your 8-year-old should be coding

"I have two kids, nine and six, a boy and a girl. And they're exposed to so much technology. But their schools haven't changed in 50 years. They're teaching the same stuff in different ways."
Colene Hardy's insight:

Worth looking into... There's another free tool out there much like this one, but it is a download. Called Scratch - created by MIT for kids. They're learning programming through animation with either tool. I like that this one doesn't require the download - can use it on a chromebook or other cheap alternative to laptop. Not sure about tablets? Pretty brilliant : )

Colene Hardy's curator insight, January 31, 2013 3:24 PM

I am LOVING infographics right now. A teachers at my school was interested in trying it out. infogr.am has somewhat of a learning curve, but it seems to be the best of the tools we tried. Easel.ly was also pretty great, but students didn't have the option of making the really long kind of infographic that is so popular right now. Plus, it fits a lot of information.
