iPads in Primary Education: Giving Pupils Ownership of their Work Using Mobile Devices

iPads in Primary Education: Giving Pupils Ownership of their Work Using Mobile Devices | Tech Tools | Scoop.it

"Having had the same class for the last two years, I have been able to develop the children's ICT skills across a range of iPad apps. Along with working with myself, both David and Chris have also worked with my class on several occasions which has given them a good understanding of a range of apps. As a result I felt it was time to allow the children to begin to choose how they wanted to present their learning, instead of instructing them on a particular app I wanted them to use."

My placement classroom has an iPad used during free time/recess/silent reading.... often times it seems to be more of a distraction due to arguments between kids using it. Also, it doesn't seem like they are actively learning from playing with it, merely guessing answers.

Social Media for Teachers: Guides, Resources and Ideas - Edutopia

"Although students are evermore connected to the social web, many of these networks remain out-of-class digital playgrounds where students congregate. In a recent survey of 1,000 teachers, just one in five said they use social media regularly with students."

iPad App of the Week: Tynker, Teaching Children to Program the Fun Way | iPad Insight | Tech Tools | Scoop.it

"Years ago, this phrase was thrown around a lot in tech circles: ‘The applications make the platform’. In the case of the iPad I don’t know that apps entirely ‘make the tablet’ – but great iPad apps are definitely a huge factor in making it such a game-changing device."

How A Classroom Of iPads Changed My Approach To Learning

How A Classroom Of iPads Changed My Approach To Learning | Tech Tools | Scoop.it

By recognizing that our prior experience with ICT had created paradigms that constrained our thinking, we are starting to glimpse new learning opportunities made possible by one-to-one integration of iPads. Rather than viewing iPads as substitutes for other technologies (including paper), it is our view that iPads can be used as tools and environments for learning that allow for deeper and more diverse engagements. Our journey with iPads in learning continues.

Young children—even toddlers—are spending more and more time with digital technology. What will it mean for their development?

John Pearce's curator insight, April 13, 2013 8:59 AM

Yet another article that backs up the thinking that tablets are rightly or wrongly making a difference to how young children interact with their world. The fact that they are growing up in world where screens are so ubiquitous begs the question regarding whether access to them should or indeed can be restricted and if so under what circumstances. The bigger question however might be more about whether through youngsters growing up with screens may mean that the novelty value we adults often ascribe to screens may fade sooner for them than for we adults. It may be that because of this youngsters may self regulate their interactions.

Mary Kate Lavin's curator insight, February 6, 2014 2:34 PM

Students are learning with the iPad because of  the kinesthetics of touching the screen.  This goes for children as small as 2 years old.  Students understand how to use a touch screen and are learning through touch.

This concept is so important. How often do students make a report and just copy the graphics from the web? They have no idea this is steeling! Even if they simply were required to show where the graphic came from, the point would come across:

63 Things Every Student Should Know In A Digital World - TeachThought

63 Things Every Student Should Know In A Digital World - TeachThought | Tech Tools | Scoop.it

"But in an increasingly connected and digital world, the things a student needs to know are indeed changing—fundamental human needs sometimes drastically redressed for an alien modern world. Just as salt allowed for the keeping of meats, the advent of antibiotics made deadly viruses and diseases simply inconvenient, and electricity completely altered when and where we slept and work and played, technology is again changing the kind of “stuff” a student needs to know."

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools by Richard Byrne | The Digital Shift

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools by Richard Byrne | The Digital Shift | Tech Tools | Scoop.it

"I vividly remember being disappointed during my first year of teaching: my students weren’t nearly as excited about primary source documents as I was. Primary source documents, as you know, offer readers a unique, real-world perspective, and I thought my kids would love delving into them. I soon learned that my disappointing results weren’t due to the documents that I’d selected, but rather how I was having students use them. That first year, they weren’t doing anything but reading them. Today, Web-based tools enable students to discover more primary sources than ever before and engage them in dynamic ways. The following items are some of my favorites."
