I stand firm on the idea that students will dig deeper and work harder if they not only are allowed to create in class, but also are able to share. This project hit both those, plus pushed them to research and gather information on their own.

This is all about "flipping the learning" where students create the tutorials for each other. This example demonstrates in how to give students ownership to their learning.

Transformational Teacher: Chris Edwards on Personalized Learning

Transformational Teacher: Chris Edwards on Personalized Learning | Tech to Teachers | Scoop.it

Chris Edwards' shared in our interview why he decided to personalize learning and the results he has experienced with his learners: engaged and motivated!

Q. Why did you decide to personalize learning?

A. I decided to personalise learning in my classroom about a year ago. I watched a TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson (the king of creativity) speaking about how he believes that our current education system is killing creativity. What made me think the most was when he said this: “Shakespeare was in someone’s class once, right?” And I thought wow! I have never considered who I may have in my class! When I started thinking in this way, it changed everything. It made me realise that the most important thing was ensuring that every individual child in my class, realised and reached their full potential.

Q. How are learners in your class changing?

A. The learners in my class are changing in a very noticeable way. The learners in my class are no longer passive. They are engaged in their own learning and are motivated. Most importantly, they are learning to be resourceful and resilient. Learning anything is an inherently frustrating process.

Read this insiteful interview and take a look a the pictures of Chris' personalized learning environment where his learners are thriving!

In schools across Australia there is strong support for linking learning in Technologies with learning literacy skills. Learning in Technologies places a high priority on accurate and unambiguous communication (ACARA, 2013).Implementing digital technologies in learning areas such as English allows special education teachers to facilitate and accommodate the learning needs of students. This is achieved through integrating assistive devices such as the iPad and its applications to develop critical literacy skills needed in the 21st century.  Consequently special education teacher have a better opportunity to develop important General capabilities such as literacy (LIT) to allows student to become literate as they develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions to interpret and use language confidently for learning and communicating in and out of school and for participating effectively in society (ACARA, 2013).

This website suggests various applications that can be used on the ipad to assist special needs students. The list of  applications were selected to improve and develop students reading, writing and spelling. They engage the students through making the activities, fun and engaging, which I think is important when teaching special needs students.

El video final se puede compartir directamente en Google+ o como un enlace para cualquier sitio que deseemos (por desgracia, no se muestra una vista previa o miniatura cuando se trata de compartir vídeo creado con StoryBuilder en Facebook).

Paul Hamilton has shared a free iPad app that has improved with age.  You can use your iPad camera to photograph text and import it as editable text.  How great is that?

He makes a  particular note of the other features that can level the playing field:

>> Text can be entered with keyboard, via voice-to-text, or with stylus.  >> As well, audio recordings can be attached to notes. >> Notes can be written on yellow or white lined pages, on blank white pages, or on “graph paper”.PDF files, can be imported from almost anywhere–PaperPort Anywhere (dedicated free cloud storage), Box, Dropbox, Docs Folder, Files/Snapshots from the Web, the iPad’s Clipboard, camera images. >> Text boxes and sticky notes can be added to notes and imported files. >> Multi-color highlighting is available.

Thank you Paul for featuring this great app!
