Seagate demos HAMR tech to produce 20TB hard drives by 2020

Seagate demos HAMR tech to produce 20TB hard drives by 2020 | tech stuff | Scoop.it

Seagate Technology will demonstrate HAMR, a technology it's counting on to fit more data onto hard disk drives. Using current technology, the data density of a typical hard drive platter is expected to max out at about 1 terabit per square inch, which means that not a lot more terabytes of data will be squeezed into traditional hard drives.

Update: Facebook Changes Stance on Graphic Videos

Update: Facebook Changes Stance on Graphic Videos | tech stuff | Scoop.it
Facebook received a flurry of criticism earlier this week when it said that it would allow graphic videos of beheadings to remain posted on the site so long as the user who posted it was "condemning" the violence.

Bonnie Burns's curator insight, October 25, 2013 12:17 PM

Though Facebook’s policy change has been hailed as a victory, with Prime Minister Cameron tweeting that he was “pleased” with the updated rule, Facebook hasn’t actually changed its position much. It will still allow graphic videos to be posted, but will simply place a greater emphasis on warning users about violent content. That’s a step in the right direction, but for people concerned about children seeing these videos, it likely won’t be enough to stop them from clicking through.

Is blogging on the decline in 2013?

Is blogging on the decline in 2013? | tech stuff | Scoop.it

Blogs went largely unchallenged until Facebook reshaped consumer behavior with its all-purpose hub for posting everything social. Twitter, which allows messages of no longer than 140 characters, also contributed to the upheaval.

Personally I think it has more to do with the amount of time it takes to produce a good blog posting and there being so little return on investment.

robyns tut's curator insight, October 27, 2013 5:30 AM

I thought this article sums up some of the things we have been learning in the course, about twitter, Facebook and even gives the history of blogs. Personally i don't think blogs are on the decline, most people still use their blogs even if they have Facebook because it is different from posting on FB.

The success of facebook is that you visit one site and it pushes the information to you...  as opposed to websites and blogs where you have to visit several sites to see if a change has been made.

Here's the world's first giant-screen Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 1520 | tech stuff | Scoop.it

Nokia announced the world's first giant-sized Windows Phone, the Lumia 1520. It will have a 6-inch screen, which makes the phone's display a full inch larger than Samsung's Galaxy S4 and two inches larger than Apple's iPhone 5S. It's also the first phone to take advantage of the newest version of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software, which has been designed to work on giant "phablets" (part phone, part tablet).

A phablet why not, but if you do want to make a phone call, best not to hold the thing to your ear: you may look ridiculous. Invest in a Bluetooth headset and yammer away with your phablet hidden.

Alex Simon's curator insight, November 21, 2013 10:35 PM

that is really cool. i was actually just asking myself the other day when they were going to come out with the next nokia lumia, and now i have an answer. i originally wanted the 1020 for christmas, but now i want the 1520. it looks really awesome.

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter | tech stuff | Scoop.it

Writing used to be strictly an in-school activity. Now, kids do 40 percent of their writing outside of school. Called “life writing,” young adults’ social writing spans texts, tweets, social media, and blogs -- and all of it’s making kids more literate.

I can't believe kids are doing more than 40% of their writing outside of school. "Life writing" may make grammar teachers cringe, but at least students are engaging with others and sharing ideas in this format.

All of the ways Apple's new free Mac OS hurts Microsoft Windows

All of the ways Apple's new free Mac OS hurts Microsoft Windows | tech stuff | Scoop.it

Apple announced today that Mavericks its latest version of Mac OS X will be free for all Mac users to download. Windows 8.1 is still $119.99.

Apple products are usually seen as expensive if not out of reach for average consumers; rarely are they associated with being free. But today the company took a big step toward changing that perception at a splashy event in Cupertino.

OS X Maverick launches for free, along with iLife and iWork app updates or even for free if you buy a Mac or an iOS device. So from now on the Mac platform and it's productivity suite are more affordable than ever. Time to switch?!?

What happens if you forget to do regular backups and/or what if something happens to your server? If you forgot to back up your latest pages there is not much you can do when a problem occurs, but restore the version you have and work from there. If something happens to your server and your backups are stored there, you will be left whistling in the wind.
