50 Must-Read K–12 Education IT Blogs

50 Must-Read K–12 Education IT Blogs | Tech & Education | Scoop.it

There’s no question that technology has transformed the classroom. Thanks to the proliferation of mobile-computing devices, social media and online-learning resources, and classroom-based tools such as interactive whiteboards and document cameras, digital literacy has become increasingly important for today’s students. But developing strong technological skills is only half the battle; mastering the subject matter using these tools is equally important.

The technologies that give the so-called 21st century classroom its power have been the subject of many K–12 blogs, with teachers, administrators, IT leaders, vendors and even parents weighing in on everything from how to fund these tools to how to effectively integrate them into the curriculum.

But it can be hard to separate worthwhile content from all the clutter, so the EdTech: Focus on K–12 team has scoured the web to assemble this honor roll of educational technology blogs you should be reading.

Our list includes a diverse mix of voices. You’ll recognize some industry luminaries, but you’ll also find some less familiar names. All 50 blogs offer valuable insights that enhance and advance the K–12 discussion. We also created a list of the best higher education technology bloggers here.

Deep Learning Isn’t about Technology

Deep Learning Isn’t about Technology | Tech & Education | Scoop.it

Embedded technology is not evidence of a transformational shift in teaching practice. It’s possible to embed technology into every aspect of teaching and learning and still have a completely teacher-centered classroom, with the teacher in control of what is learned, how it’s learned, and for the most part, how students show their learning.

The next evolution of schools: Highlights from our chat with Will Richardson

The next evolution of schools: Highlights from our chat with Will Richardson | Tech & Education | Scoop.it

What will schools look like in 25 years? Educator and parent Will Richardson sees profound changes beginning to bubble up in classrooms around the world. In the past, knowledge was bounded — both in books and in classrooms. But today, the internet provides nearly endless learning opportunities for anyone who is interested. Which means that education should no longer focus on dates and facts, all just a Google search away, but instead on critical thinking.

eBay Goes The Pinterest Way and Allows You To Discover and Curate Your Favorite Products

eBay Goes The Pinterest Way and Allows You To Discover and Curate Your Favorite Products | Tech & Education | Scoop.it

Robin Good: eBay has gone the Pinterest way by redesigning its web interface and allowing you to curate your preferred product categories as well as more specific parameters like the price range you are interested in, whether you want new or used items or prefer auctions to "buy-now" offerings.

"Everything now centers on a Pinterest-like feed of featured, personalized, and self-curated products."

WebProNews reports: eBay says that the feed will show users “a collection of items selected for you, based on your shopping history or your own personal interests.” When a logged-in user first accesses the feed, they are given the opportunity to “follow” certain types of product lines as well as connect their feed to their Facebook interests.

eBay officially announced: “Today we begin to introduce a series of significant new features and enhancements for our customers. We’re delivering a cleaner, contemporary look and feel; a more intuitive, convenient way to browse, decide and buy – both globally and locally; and a new personal way to curate your own shopping experience and discover items perfect for you...”

To test the new eBay curated feed, interface redesign and new logo, head to eBay.com (US version) and you will be immediately offered to select five product categories you are interested in.

The new eBay also allows users to integrate their Facebook account as well as their PayPal one to make it easier and faster to sell and buy on the popular online marketplace.

Storylane Prompts You to Share Your Life Story, One Question at a Time

Storylane Prompts You to Share Your Life Story, One Question at a Time | Tech & Education | Scoop.it
Storylane encourages users to go beyond posting status updates and instead dive deeper into the narrative of their life.

If you added up all the updates you’ve posted to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other social networks, would it tell a complete and compelling story of your life? Jonathan Gheller bets the answer to that is no.

Gheller, a serial entrepreneur who founded companies like Fashmash and Mixtent, launched a new social network in beta this week called Storylane, which encourages users to go beyond posting status updates and instead dive deeper into the narratives of their lives.

“At Storylane we are building a library of human experiences by crafting a community where people can share things that really matter,” Gheller told Mashable. It’s an ambitious goal to say the least, but after playing around on the site for a few minutes, it starts to seem a little more attainable.

Children who spend three-quarters of their time in sedentary behavior have up to nine times poorer motor coordination than active peers

Children who spend three-quarters of their time in sedentary behavior have up to nine times poorer motor coordination than active peers | Tech & Education | Scoop.it

American Journal of Human Biology

The study, involving Portuguese children, found that physical activity alone was not enough to overcome the negative effect of sedentary behaviour on basic motor coordination skills such as walking, throwing or catching, which are considered the building blocks of more complex movements.

"Childhood is a critical time for the development of motor coordination skills which are essential for health and well-being," said lead author Dr Luis Lopes, from the University of Minho. "We know that sedentary lifestyles have a negative effect on these skills and are associated with decreased fitness, lower self-esteem, decreased academic achievement and increased obesity."

Dr Lopes' team studied 110 girls and 103 boys aged nine to ten from 13 urban elementary schools. The children's sedentary behaviour and physical activity were objectively measured with accelerometers (a small device that children attach to their waist that quantifies movement counts and intensities) over five consecutive days. Motor coordination was evaluated with the KTK test (Körperkoordination Test für Kinder), which includes balance, jumping laterally, hopping on one leg over an obstacle and shifting platforms.

The tests were supplemented with a questionnaire for parents to assess health variables, before the authors compiled the results into three models to calculate odd ratios for predicting motor coordination. These were adjusted for physical activity, accelerometer wear time, waist to height ratio and home variables.
