"What critical pedagogy does insist upon is that education cannot be neutral. It is always directive in its attempt to enable students to understand the larger world and their role in it. Moreover, it is inevitably a deliberate attempt to influence how and what knowledge, values, desires and identities are produced within particular sets of class and social relations. For Freire, pedagogy always presupposes some notion of a more equal and just future; and as such, it should always function in part as a provocation that takes students beyond the world they know in order to expand the range of human possibilities and democratic values."

Worth a read --

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to identify and rate the importance of the competencies required by students for effective performance in a university e-learning environment mediated by a learning management system. Two expert panels identified 58 e-learning competencies considered to be essential for e-learning. Of these competencies, 22 were related to the use of technology. The remaining 36 competencies encapsulated a range of practices considered to be essential for learning within a social constructivist framework. Six of the competencies identified were either new or substantially different from what had been previously identified in the literature. A survey of e-learning stakeholders rating the importance of the e-learning competencies indicated that the competencies were not of equal importance. Critically, a number of key competencies from a social constructivist perspective that dealt with interacting and working with others were rated as being unimportant. This suggests that there is a disconnect between what the literature says about the importance of social constructivism to e-learning environments in theory and what e-learningstakeholders perceive its importance to be in practice.

Lindsay Ahmann's curator insight, January 11, 4:28 PM

This article shows a very interesting view of how emotional intelligence can be good and bad at the same time. It can be bad because people will focus mainly on that and it isn't their main task, but it can help in the way that they will know when something can be threatening the well-being of another friend/ co-worker. Being able to critically analyze someone's emotions can be hard because you won't always be right and it can be understood differently.

Class Charts - seating plans and behavior management software

Class Charts - seating plans and behavior management software | Tech & Education | Scoop.it

Seating charts are an essential part of any good teacher’s tool kit. They help organise students into appropriate learning groups and minimise behaviour issues – the class teacher asserts their authority before the lesson even begins. We take seating charts a step further. You can optionally include and display key data (eg SEN, reading age) about each pupil which is used to intelligently position pupils in the classroom to maximise learning.

Hi Jimmie,

Congrats on getting listed in iTunes.
Where can I find your show link? I’d like to give it a listen.

My latest podcast episode was a re-purposed Hangout On Air that I did with Wade Harman, and I’m really pleased with the way it turned out.

I’m using Libsyn for my podcast hosting and I don’t even use the Power Press plugin. Nothing against it, I just wanted to use the most simple method I could find, so I set up a second blog on Blogger and use Libsyn’s “on publish” feature. Works like a charm.

Our learners live in a connected world where technology impacts their lives daily. Our students often dedicate many hours to communicating, sharing, and learning online. It’s the main way they learn and they receive a surplus of information. Sadly, few reflect on the value or validity of that information. We need to teach our students to have a critical eye when navigating the web.  Below are a few ideas and resources to help you teach your learners about digital literacy.
