Using Webquests on Mobile Devices for Outdoor Learning - Tech and Teaching

Using Webquests on Mobile Devices for Outdoor Learning - Tech and Teaching | Teaching with WebQuests | Scoop.it
I've been doing a lot of reading and writing about webquests lately, since I launched Rockin' Webquests. I thought it'd be interesting, then, to dive into the research a little bit.
Bernie Dodge's insight:

As the author points out, most WebQuests don't render well on the smaller screens of mobile devices. I'm working on some responsive templates that will address that.

Comunidad de Webquest en EducaMadrid. El objetivo principal de esta comunidad es dar a conocer un conjunto organizado de WebQuest de diferentes áreas y niveles educativos.
Bernie Dodge's insight:

There's a real fan base for WebQuest in various pockets around the world. The Netherlands, China, and Brazil come to mind. It happens when individuals get enthusiastic about the idea and make things happen locally. Great to see this group in Madrid. There's another longstanding community around Barcelona as well.

Using WebQuests to Fulfill Common Core Expectations

WebQuests have always been good instructional tools for structuring students’ research and inquiry using online information sources. However, considering the fact that the method was originally established in 1995 by Bernie Dodge, professor of educational technology at San Diego State University, it is a wonder that the method isn’t more widely known and that there aren’t more high quality WebQuests living on the internet as ready resources for instruction.

The Common Core, however, gives us a terrific opportunity to re-examine and re-prioritize WebQuests as an important methodological tool.

Bernie Dodge's insight:

You can say a lot about the Common Core, for and against. Being a glass half-full kind of guy, I'm hopeful that it will nudge things in a direction that honors critical and creative thinking more than the basic-skills regime of the last dozen years. I agree that good WebQuests should fit well in a Common Core world.

ICT as a Cognitive Tool – Webquests | sjcnotredame | Teaching with WebQuests | Scoop.it

Bernie Dodge's insight:

Of course, Dave Jonassen's criteria were just a gleam in his eye when the first WebQuests were hatched. It's great to see that the model makes sense retroactively. In 1995 I was just going with my gut. Dave's criteria are greatly useful. He is already missed!

WebQuests Using British Museum Resources

Bernie Dodge's insight:

A fantastic set of lessons using resources from the British Museum, the Tate, the Natural History Museum and others. The WebQuests are formatted with lots of pictures and animation, unlike the text-heavy norm. Worth exploring to use directly or to get ideas from!

The Clash of the Titans - Two Types of Authentic Tasks

The Clash of the Titans - Two Types of Authentic Tasks | Teaching with WebQuests | Scoop.it
It has dawned on me recently that two of My Ed Heroes, Gary Stager and Bernie Dodge, have somewhat opposing viewpoints (at least it seems that way to me) of what learners should involve themselves ...
Bernie Dodge's insight:

I like Gary a lot, even though our styles are worlds apart. We do agree on a lot of things and disagree on a few. Maybe because I've been teaching pre-service teachers for decades who have to get a job in the system as it exists, I've been inclined to adjust my work to focus on what's possible in the screwed up schools we have today. Gary, on the other hand, fills a real need by going beyond what's acceptable today and talking about what schools really ought to be about. Heidi did a nice job of discerning the difference between us.

The Best Places To Create (And Find) Internet Scavenger Hunts & Webquests | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day… | Teaching with WebQuests | Scoop.it
Bernie Dodge's insight:

Larry Ferlazzo is a smart guy fighting the good fight to make schools better than they are. This piece, though, makes me a little bit ill. Just putting scavenger hunts and WebQuests on the same page is like putting lunch meat and sushi together in an article about good eating. Yes, they each have their place, but let's not muddy the waters by talking about what they have in common!
