Arnau Gifreu Castells: "Mixing documentary (non-fiction) and game (fiction) seems a strategy that many interactive documentary producers are considering, because the fact of reality combined with a structure that includes the users and put themselves at the heart of the action, creates a much more hyper and immersed scenario for the interactive documentary and its participants"...

A New Way To Let Students Securely Access YouTube EDU

A New Way To Let Students Securely Access YouTube EDU | teaching with technology | Scoop.it

YouTube is easily one of the most powerful Web 2.0 tools for the classroom. However, it had a big stumbling block: inappropriate or unrelated content. YouTube EDU solved a big part of this by creating a curated area for educational content.

Civilization is a popular series of strategy games where players must build empires, trade and wage war. It is also a personal favourite of mine. This is a fab free downloadable version which could be useful in many areas of the curriculum, including money and area in maths and learning about cultures from the past.

How to search a Scoop.it site using Google

Surely Scoop.it is hard at work developing a way for readers and curators to search within its sites, but the tool just isn't ready yet.

In the meantime, I wanted to share a workaround so folks who want to search within a Scoop.it site can do so.

The way to do this is to go to Google search and type the prefix "site:" in front of the url of the desired site to be searched. Then skip a space and enter the search term(s).

For example, if I wanted to search one of my Scoop.it sites, Into the Driver's Seat, for

entries containing information about the Flipped Classroom, the search string would look like this:

site:http://www.scoop.it/t/into-the-driver-s-seat Flipped Classroom

Note that there is no space between the colon after "site" and the url, but there is a space after the url and the search term(s). In my experience, it does not seem to matter if the first letter of the search term words is a capital.

If you have additional suggestions for how to search a specific Scoop.it site, please hit the sharing icon (dialogue bubble), below, and comment.

Hope this is helpful. -JL

Your Team Needs a War Room

Your Team Needs a War Room | teaching with technology | Scoop.it

"Before joining Hall.com, I was leading a product development team at Intuit. My team of 10 had to use a combination of tools to get the job done, including:

• Adobe Connect for video conferencing

• Etherpad for quick meeting notes

• Google Docs for more formal documents

• MSN Messenger for corporate IM

• Basecamp for tasks

• Email

We endlessly bounced from application to application. Email inboxes turned into a flood of message notifications directing us to review updates on various applications. Why should we be forced to jump between apps to get things done? Why can’t we communicate and collaborate in one place?

The Hall.com War Room is the solution. Get things done and communicate in one place. No more bouncing back and forth between productivity apps and communication products. Create a War Room for your team and experience private group chat, video chat, file sharing and more all in one place."

We Are All Made of Web Sites | Digital Pedagogy | HYBRID PEDAGOGY | teaching with technology | Scoop.it

Online students are made up of web sites. To catch their attention to the pedagogical “drama” teachers should get a glimpse of students’ concatenation of online identities. Sean Michael Morris asks: “Can instructors become just as much a concatenation of online personalities as their students?”
