Lucas and Spielberg on storytelling in games: 'it's not going to be Shakespeare'

Lucas and Spielberg on storytelling in games: 'it's not going to be Shakespeare' | teaching with technology | Scoop.it

Bryan Bishop:  'Speaking Wednesday at a panel at the University of Southern California — joined by Microsoft’s Don Mattrick — George Lucas and Steven Spielberg argued that introducing the concept of interactivity fundamentally changes the experience. "They’re always going to be different," Lucas said when asked if movies and games were going to become more similar. "They’re never going to be the same."'

Louise Robinson-Lay's insight:

The way that we connect to static story as opposed to interactive story is an interesting topic. The masters of the genres discuss it here.

Ryan Burwell's curator insight, June 14, 1:31 PM

Spielberg's observation that one-way interactions with films elicit greater empathy than interactive gameplay caught my attention. Although it initially struck me as counter-intuitive, I actually think it makes sense. When people see their environment as something to control and acquire points within, empathy just gets in the way. I think there's a larger lesson here.

2 PowerPoint 2013 secrets

2 PowerPoint 2013 secrets | teaching with technology | Scoop.it
I just gave a webinar on upgrading to PowerPoint 2013, explaining all the new features and how to use them. During the webinar, I discussed 2 features that I realized are so hard to find that I really should share them with everyone.

In PowerPoint 2010 and earlier, when you chose Insert > Clip Art, you could specify that you wanted only photographs. You did that in the Clip Art task pane from the Results Should Be drop-down list, as you see here.

Amazon launches Storyteller to turn scripts into storyboards -- automagically

Amazon launches Storyteller to turn scripts into storyboards -- automagically | teaching with technology | Scoop.it

Excerpt from review article by VentureBeat:
"Upload your script, choose some backgrounds, and magically created a professional-looking storyboard of your movie. Or the graphic novel version of your text-based anything.

Amazon Studios released Storyteller today to allow writers and filmmakers to quickly, easily — and cheaply — storyboard their scripts.

Roy Price, Amazon’s director of Studios said: “Storyteller provides a digital backlot, acting troupe, prop department, and assistant editor — everything you need to bring your story to life.”

You start by uploading a script to Amazon Studios — or by playing with one that’s already there. Then simply page through the script paragraph by paragraph. Storyteller will try to match up characters, props, and background with the words in each chunk of text, and it does a surprisingly good job.

But if you don’t like what Storyteller gives, you can choose from its library, or even upload your own custom background or characters. Currently, the software has a library of thousands of props, characters, and backgrounds..."

Thanks for this comprehensive list. I teach via Skype and use Google hangout and Facetime with some students, friends and uni; colleagues. I don't know why more isn't made of these tools. Saves time and money. Any many of them are great for collaborative work.
Patricia Daniels's curator insight, June 8, 9:50 AM

A very comprehensive list here of video conferencing tools. I use Skype to teach English as a second language but fallback on Google Hangout and Facetime if we have any technical issues. Not that I've had any issues with Skype, but more my connection when I'm travelling.

When I've got some extra time I'm going to work my way through this list as I see there are a couple that don't require signing in, or downloading of software, which is useful when you want to communicate synchronously with people who are suspicious about logging in to any tools or who don't have the capacity for extra downloads.

Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education

Via Robin Good
Louise Robinson-Lay's insight:

An interesting look at.

Christoph Meier's curator insight, May 26, 5:44 PM

1) top & bottom meet - Kuratieren ermöglicht das Zusammenführen von Inhalten aus etablierten Medien (z.B. Zeitungen) und persönlichen Netzwerken (z.B. aus dem Kollegenkreis);

2) integration of mediums, messages, platforms - es können darüber hinaus verschiedene Typen von Inhalten (Bilder, Videos, Texte, etc.) zusammengeführt werden;

3) sources, voices & credibility online - die Verlässlichkeit der verwendeten Quellen muss eingeschätzt, argumentatorisch abgestützt und in der Sammlung sichtbar gemacht;

4) framing, bias, agenda & perspective - es muss reflektiert und aufgezeigt werden, welche Perspektiven in den kuratierten Elementen zum Tragen kommen;

5) appreciating diversity - die Vielfalt von Stimmen muss nicht nur zur Kenntnis genommen, sondern aktiv bewältigt werden.

Tim Brook's curator insight, June 1, 4:33 AM
