The Mobile Learning Landscape 2015 Infographic

The Mobile Learning Landscape 2015 Infographic | Teaching with Tablets | Scoop.it
Widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets has fuelled extensive interest among learning professionals about the use of mobile devices for training delivery. What is the state of mobile learning in 2015? Is growth underway? Are obstacles being surmounted only to give way to new stumbling blocks? Or is mobile learning accruing the sort of success stories learning professionals have hoped to see?

To explore those questions and other elements of mobile learning, ATD and i4cp sought insights from learning leaders and professionals worldwide in The Mobile Landscape 2015: Building Toward Anytime, Anywhere Learning. Their views, experiences, and strategies offer valuable guidance and examples for those just beginning the mobile learning journey.

ATD and i4cp found that 34 percent of organizations have mobile learning programs. Even among organizations not actively leveraging mobile learning, interest in its potential has—and does—run high. The numbers of learning professionals with mobile programs in development or under serious consideration have consistently matched figures for those in use.

Excellence in e-learning: a quality enhancement approach

Excellence in e-learning: a quality enhancement approach | Teaching with Tablets | Scoop.it

This paper describes the E-xcellence methodology for the quality assurance of e learning.

Authors: Kear, Karen; Williams, Keith and Rosewell, Jonathan

It outlines the E-xcellence process, and describes the main supporting resources: a set of 35 benchmarks, a quality manual and the ‘Quickscan’ self-assessment tool. The manual expands on the 35 benchmark statements, offering performance indicators and supporting discussion.

The Quickscan is available online and is intended for use as an initial self-assessment. A key part of the E-xcellence approach is the ‘local seminar’. This is a collaborative workshop where an interdisciplinary team of staff from a higher education institution discuss the quality of their e learning with visiting expert assessors.

The paper describes the processes involved in the local seminars and discusses their value to participants. We conclude that the E-xcellence methodology, and in particular the local seminars, provide valuable opportunities for reflection and discussion among staff with different roles, supported by visiting experts. This collaborative approach helps higher education institutions to review their e learning and plan for improvement.

Don't like that sign in options are only through Facebook, Google or Microsoft, though.

Educational Leadership:Teaching with Mobile Tech: How to Transform Teaching with Tablets

Educational Leadership:Teaching with Mobile Tech: How to Transform Teaching with Tablets | Teaching with Tablets | Scoop.it
When you look at the very best work happening in iPad classrooms, you'll see students creating media, showcasing their understanding, collaborating with peers, and communicating with broad audiences. The pockets of excellence are ever-present and inspiring. On the whole, however, tablets are most often used to reproduce existing practices—to distribute resources and enable students to take notes.

Past generations of school leaders might have been forgiven for permitting these patterns of technology adoption, but today we have the benefit of history to look back on. We know that without a change in our technology integration strategies, there's no reason to expect that a new device will magically create new teaching practices in schools.

To make the most of the investment in tablet computers, school leaders need to do three things. First, they need to work with their communities to articulate a clear vision for how new technology will improve instruction. Second, they need to help educators imagine how new technologies can support those visions. Finally, they need to support teachers and students on a developmental journey that will take them from using tablets for consumption to using them for curation, creation, and connection."

Very interesting, thanks!

Mershon Viscusie's curator insight, May 19, 1:41 PM

Questions to ask:

How will learning be different?

How will students improve as learners? As scholars? As citizens?

What will they be able to do 3 or 4 years after the ipad adoption that they can’t do now?

If ipads are the answer, what was the question?

What does awesome look like?

How does an ipad align with a vision of  meaningful and purposeful learning?

8 Good iPad Apps to Integrate Game-based Learning in Your Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

8 Good iPad Apps to Integrate Game-based Learning in Your Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Teaching with Tablets | Scoop.it

Game-based learning is an educational trend that has gained so much popularity in recent years. At its core, game-based learning involves the use of the learning principles underlying games' play in learning situations. In his book “ What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy”, James Paul Gee mentioned a number of these principles all of which are geared towards improving learners’ critical thinking skills  and  enhancing their problem solving competencies. Marc Prensky is another thought leader in this field and his book “Digital Game Based Learning” provides a very good explanation of the basics of game based learning.

For those of you using iPad in their teaching, here is a set of interesting apps you can use to incorporate the ethos of game-based learning in your classroom.   These are some excellent educational games  to engage students in different learning scenarios. We invite you to check them out and share with us what you think of them. Enjoy

Brain breaks are all the rage these days with GoNoodle cornering the tech market for group dancing, running in place, and yoga.  Plus it’s #gamified which motivates students to participate.

However, not all students will need a break at the same time, and I have not seen the level of engagement when I’ve tried setting up individuals on GoNoodle.  So I’ve tracked down my favorite 3 free iPad apps for energizing brain breaks that are also motivating and use gamification to keep students focused.  Click the image to download them for free on iTunes.
