Where is reflection in the learning process?

Where is reflection in the learning process? | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it

I asked the students to get in small groups to discuss these questions. They got in their groups and just looked at one another with baffled looks on their faces while remaining silent. I tried rewording the questions and providing examples and still got blank looks when they returned to their group discussions.

Keeping Up with… Digital Pedagogy

Keeping Up with… Digital Pedagogy | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it
Digital pedagogy focuses specifically on the use of technology to break down learning barriers and enhance students’ learning experiences. By definition, its existence dates back to the earliest use of digital tools in classrooms -- however, larger awareness of the need for digital pedagogy has emerged only in the last decade or so, in recognition of the changing relationship between students and computers, handheld devices, social media, and more.

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it
There is an assumption that persists in the educational community that more mature teachers are much more difficult and reluctant to be trained on the effective use of educational technology. To some degree, I think this assumption has been built on by the digital native vs digital immigrant myth. But as someone who has trained teachers of all ages all over the world I would say that, from my own experience, this hasn’t been the case.

How to Engage the Students Who Need It Most: Gamification

How to Engage the Students Who Need It Most: Gamification | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it
That’s the truth about gamification: it will not make your kids smarter or perform better on tests. Gamification is about increasing motivation and engagement. Once you have a kid’s attention, it is still up to the teacher to deliver a solid, meaningful lesson. Gamification is not a magic bullet, nor does every student need it, but the students who benefit the most from a gamified classroom just so happen to be the ones who most need motivation and engagement.

Understanding the Role of Achievements in Game-Based Learning | Blair | International Journal of Serious Games | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it
The objective of the current research was to examine whether one potentially effective gaming strategy—achievements—has a positive impact on learning in a game-based environment. An achievement in a video game is a reward or recognition earned by players for an in-game accomplishment. This paper describes a series of studies to evaluate the effects of achievement types on learning in a game designed to teach about health resources.

Innovate My School - An immersive world of learning through play | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it
Children are naturally creative, and in order to encourage their talents, we should be nurturing this creativity, rather than forcing it into a box-ticking process. It’s no secret that when children are having fun, they learn more about the topic as their engagement is greater. By allowing them to see subjects in a playful manner, they will be more enthusiastic about them later in their school careers, and they will have developed the cognitive and personal skills needed to work with others in their class more effectively.

Four cautionary lessons about education technology

Four cautionary lessons about education technology | Teaching with CALL | Scoop.it
There's good failure and there's dumb failure. The dumb failure we see over and over again is just dumping technology into schools and hoping for magic to happen; not having a plan, thinking that things will happen automatically because kids are “digital natives,” a term that obscures as much as it illuminates; thinking that just because technology is there your problem is solved."
