20 BYOD Resources For The 21st Century Schools

20 BYOD Resources For The 21st Century Schools | Teaching Tools Today | Scoop.it

"BYOD policies–Bring Your Own Device–allow schools to bring technology into the classroom with a “bottom-up” approach. Such an approach can save money, allow students to use their own devices, and encourage a student-centered approach to learning."

Via John Evans
Ness Crouch's insight:

Let's make learning student centred. It's really important that students have access to the web and as we know many schools do not have the funds to provide devices one to one. A solution is BYOD but obviously we need to ensure that there are protocol around the use and expectations of being a good digital citizen.

Alan Ovens's comment, April 4, 2013 7:18 PM
I like this concept and prevents particular companies from monopolizing the educational landscape and limiting student options. Apple seems to dominate classroom space, although increasingly Android is the choice of young people. BYOD allows the relative strengths of each platform (and device) to benefit the learning opportunities available in the classroom and not just the commercial interests of some multinational company.
Ralph Springett's curator insight, April 5, 2013 9:40 PM

So students and faculty like the idea of BYOD. The trick will be to manage BYOD so students get an equivalent learning experience.

Harvey Chambers's curator insight, April 13, 2013 11:02 PM

Read this and consider trying JUST 1 in your classroom over the next three weeks.  Assess the pros and cons and determine whether what you used has value for future use.  If not, try another and do the same.  You'll be surprised at how beneficial the attempts are including technologies in your class will be.

5 Great Apps for Assessing with Quizzes

5 Great Apps for Assessing with Quizzes | Teaching Tools Today | Scoop.it

"Assessment reports and online grading tools take away the tedious task of collecting and grading quizzes, as well as provide educators with spreadsheet-style assessment results that can focus on the student, the question, or even the topic. To help bring solutions to the classroom, our Teq PD team created this eBook, to inform you about some of our favorite and most useful assessment apps."

Via John Evans
Ness Crouch's insight:
Certainly not my favourite way of assessing but a useful way of seeing progress. I sometimes use quizzes as formative assessment and sometimes as a pre assessment to gauge current knowledge.

6 Simple Ways to Accelerate your Learning with Mind Mapping

6 Simple Ways to Accelerate your Learning with Mind Mapping | Teaching Tools Today | Scoop.it

Learning to learn remains a powerful and necessary skill in every field of activity.  In addition to this skill, imagine that your learning can be accelerated, your mind challenged and your efficiency improved.

Create presentations:

One of the most important roles of presentations is for you to practice your creativity and understanding on a specific topic or subject.  When you are able to present your own perspective on a specific matter, your learning experience becomes extremely powerful.  You become the owner of that information, gaining ownership over the delivered content.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, February 20, 2013 10:02 PM

The digital tools listed in this post are focused on vocabulary instruction, a key concern given the Common Core State Standards. Vocabulary comes into play when we look at reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students need to have a broad vocabulary, and we can support this through both direct and indirect instruction. This post provides links to online tools in the areas of:

* Reference Tools

* Word Clouds

* Games and Reviews
* Word Walls and Virtual Field Trips

The post states:

Digital tools allows students to:

* hear pronunciations;

* read words in a variety of authentic examples;

* view photos and images related to words;

* reinforce word learning through interactive games;

* play with and manipulate language;

* discover rhyming words; and

* collaborate with classmates to create virtual words walls.

Consider checking out this post and providing time for students to explore some of these tools in and outside the classroom.
