Why You Should Be Using Video In Your Classroom [Infographic]

Why You Should Be Using Video In Your Classroom [Infographic] | Teaching Tools Today | Scoop.it

Using video in the classroom has come a long way from a TV and VCR on a cart to watch a movie during class (The standard about ten gazillion years ago when I was a student). There are a ton of different ways you can employ video in your classroom, from video feedback to educational videos about specific topics, there is a lot of possibility out there. Even if you know that this way and that are options for including video in your classroom, you might still be wondering why you should be using video in the first place.

Sound advice here on how to build critical thinking skills into the curriculum from an early age to support the growth of the next generation of digital social scientists & citizen researchers. This is great but still leaves us with a problem about how to equip established social researchers with an understanding of the potential & challenges in social media research, especially those who serve on IRBs granting access and clearance via ethics panels to new research projects.

Most of the tools cited here are easy to use and have user friendly interface and they will let you create your own e-magazine or newspaper in few simple steps. Yet I would recommend your discretion as you use them with your students.

This made me think about not just how we as teachers feel about technology use in schools, but also, how do our students feel about it? We know many of them know more about how to use the technology than we do, so are we involving them in the decisions we make about use and purchase of technology...or are we doing what we've always done and assumed we know better than they do?

Interesting tension in this article between best practices and the personality traits of an individual instructor/leader...

L R Everitt's curator insight, November 25, 2013 3:30 PM

I absolutely agree with this premise: students need to feel the classroom is a safe place to take risks and even make mistakes, all in the interest of learning.  That sense of security comes from agreeing build a positive learning environment, which is a loving place to be.  Students, as well as teachers, have a lot of power to make or break such an agreement, so modeling this behavior and teaching students how to build mutual trust and respect is worth a small loss in academic instruction time at the beginning of the course.

SID Kit for Schools - Safer Internet Day

SID Kit for Schools - Safer Internet Day | Teaching Tools Today | Scoop.it

Welcome, and thank you for joining us to celebrate Safer Internet Day (SID) 2013, taking place on Tuesday 5 February 2013 with the theme ‘Online rights and responsibilities’ and the slogan ‘Connect with respect’.

In 2013, for the second year running, we have again produced a SID Kit for Schools (and other educators), to bring together some great resources for raising online safety awareness.

Click on the links to the right to explore.

You can use the resources as best suits your local circumstances. For example, you may choose to use all or a selection of the resources, or you may choose to take parts of the kit and adapt them to your own needs. Likewise, although Safer Internet Day is celebrated on a particular day, you may choose to raise the profile of online safety over a day, week or month, depending on what is appropriate in your individual setting.

And, as this year’s theme focuses on ===>  ‘Online rights and responsibilities’,

– for example the ===> rights and responsibilities of parents and carers, educators, and industry, as well as the rights and responsibilities of children and young people themselves in their online lives. <===
