Karen Ford's insight:

This is  what you need to encourage your students to pay attention to.  Without direction, they will just collect aimlessly and probably never really explore the sources.  If we get them used to really practicing curation... then -- not so many battles to fight....!

Wow...quite a bit of activity on this Scoop!  So many interpretations and ideas, that I'm having to do some curating in order to pick out some info to use with my grad and undergrad students.  A colleague and I are trying to expand our approach a bit.  We'll be using Diigo to introduce and teach about curating content for their various disciplines.  Then we plan to have them use scoop.it to collect and then curate materials for a lesson/unit of  their choice.  The catch is that they have to identify and curate differentiated levels of materials for the struggling readers, language learners, middle of the road students and the AP students.

I would welcome any insight that you believe should be shared with teacher ed majors, as well as, practicing teachers.

Thanks! You mean collaborating on Scoop.it or on Flipboard? (it's possible there)

Maybe we can collaborate on a "apps" channel. But I really don't have much time and I wouldn't have the time to write such great insightful comments as you write all the time :( But I'm interested in working with you on a channel.

A Bloom's Digital Taxonomy For Evaluating Digital Tasks
Karen Ford's insight:

I put this here because as I assign curating or infographic tasks, I have wanted the kind of assessment that would fit with the tasks.  Since so many of the HOTS (higher order thinking skills) are used in both of these tasks, this Taxonomy For Evaluating Digital Tasks seems like a great place to start as I continue in designing my own.

Stepping Up the Backchannel In the Classroom

Students need our guidance to use virtual platforms for ACADEMIC purposes. We can’t rely on their “so called” native status to know how and what to do.
Karen Ford's insight:

I absolutely agree with you...our students are usually pretty good with using social media for interacting with each other... but if you ask them to use the same social media to gather data for an infographic or to find out opinions, many of them don't seem to understand the transfer of skills.  SO - WE HAVE TO SHOW THEM HOW TO DO THAT.... IT'S LIKE ANY OTHER THING IN A CLASS THAT THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND.... IT'S THE JOB OF THE SUBJECT MATTER TEACHER TO SHOW THEM HOW TO DO WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO... ABSOLUTELY NOT TO DO IT FOR THEM... TEACH THEM HOW SO THEY CAN CONTINUE TO LEARN.

An absolutely significant skill in any research or investigation, for educators and learners in the digital age - the curation of content- with a clear focus or question in mind, the capacity to target a search field, sift through, reflect on and make decisions about the most suitable resource or evidence to use. What a great learning experience.

I guess you can never have enough curating, in this digital age anything that can keep you up to date and help visibility is worth a try. I like the way the simplify everything.
