Active learning is the key to education and not long boring lectures. I have heard this again and again, but still we persist.  Perhaps recording lectures are useful because you can stop it and listen again, but still it is passive.  Links within this to change in education.

Changing Records of Learning through Innovations in Pedagogy and Technology

Changing Records of Learning through Innovations in Pedagogy and Technology | Technology Enhanced Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Innovations in pedagogy and technology could revolutionize academic records, moving our approach from one of checking off boxes to one of connecting the dots. This article highlights technological and pedagogical models that connect the dots toward agile, personalized evidence of learning.
Fiona Harvey's insight:
This is an important article, written by Helen Chen who I respect hugely.  The focus here is the changing nature of recording all activities whilst at university (college) and capturing the reality of innovations to support the sharing of this information both internally and externally to key stakeholders.  Includes connecting dots, MESH (Mindsets, Essential Skills and Habits) Badges and MOOCs.  A great read to bring ideas together.

Great resource! A whole set of resources that are still relevant today. If anyone was going to create a CPD course for blended learning or distance learning there would be little point trying to recreate these.  Some of the case studies are old now but still the underlying concepts are all there and some very credible interviews with respected practitioners.

Secret Teacher: I refuse to be a Kardashian with a PGCE

Secret Teacher: I refuse to be a Kardashian with a PGCE | Technology Enhanced Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Social media has brought out our vanity and self-pity, with superstar teachers and their uncritical followers creating a toxic culture of one-upmanship
Fiona Harvey's insight:

This is great to highlight how we differ in our use of online forums. Just reading about critical discourse for deeper learning and this calls out for some attention to that.  The article complains of how people who are followed on Twitter are meaner than those of Facebook.  Also how Twitter re-enforces the egos of teachers.  I guess it depends who is in your networks. I'm not trying to start a critical discussion when I post something unless the topic calls for it.  Sometimes, I post to share useful links that I know are helpful to my networks.  Time and a place I would think could be the mantra.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

I really like the idea of Project based learning.  Something needs to give re assessment, we just offer (mainly) exams and coursework (not projects, but essays) which aren't necessarily matching re world needs.  Disciplines differ in their requirements for assessment, so possibly it would be good to see how we might adapt (whilst still maintaining high quality programmes in accordance with regulations). Obviously, this refers to UK HEIs.
