distance learning or learning through course videos can be very passive.  As we move in this direction we need to be aware and careful of how to continue to engage our "virtual" students

5 Apps to Boost Collaborative Learning

5 Apps to Boost Collaborative Learning | Teaching Online with Pizzaz | Scoop.it

"No, what makes coming to school “worth it” is the collaborative learning experience—or in his words, the “opportunity to engage in a fantastic dialogue, trialogue, multilogue with a fantastically varied assortment of consciousnesses.” Indeed, the teacher facilitates and instructs and the books are the springboard from which conversations and teachable moments are launched. But Kahn believes classrooms become magical because of the relationships we nurture and the conversations we have. "

Educators Playing Musical Chairs

Educators Playing Musical Chairs | Teaching Online with Pizzaz | Scoop.it
millengen's insight:

Let's face it.  Gone are the days when we wear our teaching belts on, enter a classroom, and expect to teach until retirement.  These days, virtual classrooms are real, and teaching online means entering a very competitive teaching world.  We may have all the initials at the end of our names, but jobs are scarce.

How can we stand out in a world full of red chairs and white walls? Establishing our web presence is essential.  Online instructors need more than the teaching degrees to survive these days.  They need to prove to schools that they can teach - and that they can engage the technically-savy students.

Establishing your web presence takes work, but it only takes a few minutes each day.  First, you need a blog so that you can tell the world your teaching qualities and philosophy.  Blogs are also avenues to share your ideas, what learning theories you believe in, and the latest innovations you use to engage your learners.

Second, you need to invest in these innovations.  Why not make an animated video of what you are teaching? Also, you need to join the social networks.  You can even create a group in LinkedIn so that you can start networking with other educators.  Also, try to get an article published.  Universities these days, are thriving to be research universities.  They need both writers and instructors.  If the university can see you as an asset - being able to write articles with their names on your title pages in journal publications - then they already like you.  Invest your time researching for journal publications that you would like to write for.  Each day, write something.... By week 3, you probably have something substantial to submit to the publishers.

We live in an innovative era and as much as Madonna can reinvent herself....educators should also reinvent themselves, utilizing technology and the usual "press." If we don't reinvent ourselves, we start having the likeness of an 80's pop singer, who only has one hit for the rest of his or her life.  I'm sure you can come up with one name or two.

Finally, have fun....you have so many talents and skills.  Share them with others on the web.  Don't get caught in a room with white walls and empty red chairs.  Cheers!

Ma, There's a MOOC Under My Bed. Faculty concerns about new forms of online education | Teaching Online with Pizzaz | Scoop.it

"The irony about MOOCs is that hardly anyone opposes them except many of the academics qualified to teach them. Recently academics, including groups of faculty at Amherst College, Duke University, and San Jose State University, have been publicly skeptical of, and even hostile to new forms of teaching online courses."
