3 Reasons why Students Don’t Participate in Online Discussions | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Why don’t my students participate in online discussion forums?’ I’ve received numerous comments [questions] like this one, about the lack of student participation in online discussion forums from instructors who appear more puzzled than frustrated. Why don’t students contribute even when their involvement is graded?

The power of noticing in second language acquisition

The power of noticing in second language acquisition | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

"What is attention, and what role does it play in foreign language learning? That’s the question that this little language note will explore," says Gavin, graduate students in a language-related field at the University of Hawai'i.

After reviewing some of the research on noticing in second language acquisition (Schmidt) and examining four key ideas, he concludes:

"Learning another language exercises our attention brain muscles. And learning to achieve a higher quality of attention in our daily life through daily language exercise can’t be a bad thing…right?"

Interesting for teachers as an argument to encourage language learners, but also for information about the key concept of noticing.

What is "Design-Thinking?"

What is "Design-Thinking?" | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it
In many ways, this Fellow-year has been a treasure hunt. The guiding question has been "Where are the richest opportunities for authentic, engaged, student-centered learning?"  By extension, which ...

Interestingly, one of the most exciting approaches I’ve come across has a humble origin: the process associated with design. “Design Thinking” is a process, a framework, a series of steps that designers go through in order to solve problems, to improve existing ideas, or to realize previously unseen potential.

===> In short, it’s a deliberate  process that can be used to increase curiosity, creativity, and critical-thinking. <===

Notice the similarities of "design thinking", instructional design, engineering design and game design. All are examples of simple good design.

Developing Your Digital Study Skills

Developing Your Digital Study Skills | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Making the move from our safe and trusted traditional literacy habits to newer digital skills can be quite a challenge, but as teachers I think we are really unlikely to be able to use technology and help our students use technology really effectively unless we are prepared to face this challenge. Technology needs to be more than part of the way we teach but it also has to be part of the way we ourselves continue to learn and part of our everyday professional practice.
