Evaluating web-based tools for language instruction

Evaluating web-based tools for language instruction | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Over the last few years, interest in web-based tools has expanded rapidly, but how do we know which ones to use and which to avoid? In this workshop, we will look together at some web and mobile applications and establish criteria by which we can evaluate them to ensure we use tools that will lead to enhanced language learning.

Carmenne Kalyaniwala-Thapliyal's insight:

A video document has been used since a while now, but what is interesting is if and how it is integrated in project based learning. Students do learn better if they are engaged in their own learning processes and how much better can that get if they are involved in working on their own projects.... though I would add the qualifying term 'collaborative' to projects

7 Awesome Visual Alternatives to Google Docs | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

You don't need a degree in rocket science to know that visually organized data appeals more to students than plain text-based scribble. The visual stimulus is quickly captured by the brain and requires way less processing to understand and code it than written text. As teachers, we need to capitalize on this and try to include as many relevant visuals as possible.

The curation comment is interesting... I think it's fantastic that students are able to gain these skills without the assistance of a teacher, but ultimately if they veer off the path or have been misguided, they will always need a facilitator to not only show students the tools but also give them some best practice ideas.
