How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Writing used to be strictly an in-school activity. Now, kids do 40 percent of their writing outside of school. Called “life writing,” young adults’ social writing spans texts, tweets, social media, and blogs -- and all of it’s making kids more literate.

Histoire de recadrer les pessismistes et passéistes: l'écriture est plus que jamais vivace!

BI Media Specialists's curator insight, November 1, 2013 8:28 PM

I can't believe kids are doing more than 40% of their writing outside of school. "Life writing" may make grammar teachers cringe, but at least students are engaging with others and sharing ideas in this format.

Catherine Byrd Bushby's curator insight, June 22, 2014 3:13 AM

That's why we need to bring social writing into school.

The power of noticing in second language acquisition

The power of noticing in second language acquisition | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Shona Whyte:

"What is attention, and what role does it play in foreign language learning? That’s the question that this little language note will explore," says Gavin, graduate students in a language-related field at the University of Hawai'i.

After reviewing some of the research on noticing in second language acquisition (Schmidt) and examining four key ideas, he concludes:

"Learning another language exercises our attention brain muscles. And learning to achieve a higher quality of attention in our daily life through daily language exercise can’t be a bad thing…right?"

Interesting for teachers as an argument to encourage language learners, but also for information about the key concept of noticing.

I like the idea of this.  Maybe we will start a learning series at BBE to finish off the school year.  Staff can earn badges for completing goals/objectives.

An online course to help you understand better how to use technology to enhance your teaching practice. Aimed at higher education, but surely worth a try for those in other learning stages.
