60 smarter ways to use Google Classroom

60 smarter ways to use Google Classroom | Teaching FRENCH | Scoop.it
Google Classroom is quietly becoming the most powerful tool in education technology.

It may lack the visual appeal of iPads, or the student credibility of a BYOD program. It may not be as forward-thinking as we’d like here at TeachThought, but Google Classroom excels in providing solutions for a broad swath of teachers who have a variety of expertise and comfort level with education technology. It also uses Google’s familiar template that many teachers have used for years. As such, it scratches the itch for many teachers in many classrooms right here, right now.

So below are (at least) 60 thing you can do with Google Classroom. We’ll be updating this list as new ideas come in, the platform changes, and we learn more about its subtleties on our own.

Engage students with Active Learning Ideas

Engage students with Active Learning Ideas | Teaching FRENCH | Scoop.it

Take a minute to think about a few of your most recent lessons. What’s happening in your classroom? What are you and your co-teacher doing? More important, what are your students doing? Are your students engaged? Or are they just being politely compliant? How do you know?

There is the real possibility that there are times when you get caught in the conformity trap (all well-intentioned teachers do sometimes). When we keep our focus zoomed in on our lesson plans, paperwork, parent phone calls, meetings, and other professional roles and responsibilities, we can lose sight of what’s happening in the moments with our students.

But fear not. We have ultimate control. We can make the moments of learning ignite with engagement! So, let’s see what we can do to keep engagement as a natural part of the learning process.

3 fun examples of Technology-Based Assessement

3 fun examples of Technology-Based Assessement | Teaching FRENCH | Scoop.it
The availability of tools like Kahoot, Quizizz and Quizlet, have enhanced the variety of assessments that teachers can create and use in the classroom. Assessments are an area where you could devote a lot of time trying to find the perfect assessment that would enable all students to have an equal opportunity to show what they know and can do with the material. I’ve mentioned a few of these tools to give you an idea of some of the options available and how teachers can use the data provided to learn about what the students need and to guide their next steps. These are still great tools to use, and recently, they have each added additional features which really engage students, open up new, creative possibilities for students to practice their skills both in and outside of the classroom.

6 powerful strategies for Deeper Learning in your classroom

6 powerful strategies for Deeper Learning in your classroom | Teaching FRENCH | Scoop.it
In the U.S., millions of middle and high school students attend schools that don’t match the reality of their lives. By their teenage years, young people should be solving complex problems, thinking critically about tough concepts, and communicating their ideas effectively. Yet, our schools are organized to be lecture-based, encouraging students to simply memorize facts and follow rules.

In my new book, “Deeper Learning: How Eight Innovative Public Schools are Transforming Education in the Twenty-First Century,” I take you inside a growing movement that represents what should be the new normal. Deeper Learning is a set of student outcomes that includes mastery of essential academic content; thinking critically and solving complex problems; working collaboratively and communicating effectively; having an academic mindset, and being self-directed.

This more robust and responsive educational experience offers a new framework for educators and schools to rise to the challenge of preparing students for college, careers, and the world today. The eight schools profiled in my book are embracing Deeper Learning principles with six core strategies.

6 Ed Tech tools to try in 2016

6 Ed Tech tools to try in 2016 | Teaching FRENCH | Scoop.it
About a year ago, I published an e-book called the Teacher’s Guide to Tech. Over the last month, I have been updating it for 2016, adding over 30 new tools and refreshing the information I had about the original ones. I have to say, the 2015 version was excellent, but now it’s SO MUCH BETTER. (To take a peek at the guide, scroll to the bottom of this post.)

In the process, I discovered some tools that I absolutely fell in love with, and I wanted to share them with you here. Each of these tools can make your teaching more efficient and effective, and your students’ learning deeper and more engaging.

Let’s take a look.
