This is a compelling and remarkable point in time as we are in the throes of beginning to rethink and, I hope, truly reimagine how we educate our kids. Publishers could have a role, but they have to scan the horizon and plan for the future as well as the present.

The last paragraph is particularly important and potent. Education is a $1 trillion business. That means children's learning and teaching are not necessarily at the heart of education, but are displaced and deformed by economic and ideological agendas.

Yes!! Though I'd remove "digital" from the title and let's just call it learning, regardless of the path or resources student use. I love the comment about standardized tests being more like validators of what students know and can do. But it's a point well taken that teachers, and administrators, still struggle to know what student work and student use of technology tells them about what students can do and what they really know. It's almost as though we have to take a giant step back and say, "Hold on. Let me just watch and listen, then read and really see (not just grade) the student's work."

It's terrifying to me that we have to justify libraries and remind people they are relevant. There is a reason we started calling librarians "media specialists." Yes there are still books in libraries and a place for books, but the folks who know about databases, search strategies, online resources, cool tools and resources for teaching and learning? Yep, those library media specialists. The folks who are lobbying hardest and loudest because they are aware of the digital use divide even before NETP addressed? Yep again, those library media specialists. It is, I think, the short-sighted district that cuts funding for library personnel and resources.

I see this in schools a lot with the IT/technology teams overburdened with the day-to-day details of the technology and infrastructure. Those folks often don't have the right skills to help teachers learn how to use the technology as an instructional/learning resource; they can provide fundamental training on how to make it work but rarely have time or capability to go further than that. I must say, though, this is good news for consultants like myself. Unfortunately, the tech folks can rarely be part of the trainings so they can learn AND so they can better understand what teachers like, struggle with, resist. . .and why.

We’re at an inflection point with our approach to testing and measurement … “Common Core was such a good idea,” remarked a middle school administrator I recently spoke with.

I'm not going to point out that one of the main architects of the current testing craze is the former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. (And, just for the record, I'm betting he runs for mayor of Chicago.) However, in all fairness, the history of testing is a long and convoluted one. It served a purpose at one time; now I'm not so certain. Teachers who assess continuously know what their know and can do and, most importantly, kids know what they know and can do. If we eliminated the batteries of tests, there would time for, well, I don't know, learning. How crazy is that?

"To many K-12 students, there's only one thing that's as exciting as summer vacation: unexpected days off during the winter. Snow days can offer students a welcome break from their regular schedules, with time to goof off, catch up on studies, or socialize. But that might be changing."

I think having the option to use snow days for elearning makes sense. But not all kids will have technology resources at home, or be home on snow days because of arrangements working parents might need to make, or have power because of the snow. Expectations need to be reasonable.

Doesn't surprise me that budget tops the list, but I think it's misleading. There are lots of schools doing really cool things with technology because they have a vision and a plan, so they figure it out. And figuring it out also means making good choices about how to use what they have and how to plan for getting what else they need, whether training, PD, apps, hardware, whatever.

I think she worked a little too hard to include "mindset" in her article which would have been just fine focusing on action research. I love action research. It's become a way of thinking and problem-solving for me and was an integral component of nearly every graduate course I've ever designed. Ms Hicks lays out some practical thinking as you approach using action research for practical, hands-on learning about the craft of teaching.

I agree with this but with a caveat. Teachers should be working collaboratively with their IT team in their school or district for some of these. Then the IT team can disseminate the information throughout the school or district just in case more than one teacher has come back from a conference with a desire to use an internet resource. AND, if teachers share their finds with the IT team, then not only will the IT team be able to make sure of the legal and safety issues and help spread the word, but the IT team will have a better sense of the kinds of resources in which teachers are showing interest.

New technologies hold great potential to improve education in developing Asia and the Pacific. Here are a few guiding principles to help to ensure interventions are relevant.

No, they're not. And this premise is indicative of part of the problem: "Clarify what new technologies are expected to achieve within a given program." First, the technology will achieve nothing. It's a tool. Like a pencil. The pencil will not solve the problem nor will it write the essay. It is a tool by which an individual might be able to solve a problem or write an essay. There are no guarantees. So it's not the technology, it's not the monitoring and evaluation. What will make the difference for teachers is training, training, and training. Then coaching, administrative support, and clarity of the administrative/school/district vision for how and why technology can make a difference in the classroom, in the school, in the district, and in the community. What will also make a difference is communication with parents so they understand what technology is being used in the classroom, and how and why it is being used in the classroom. This has nothing to do with being a first-world country. This has to do with investing time and effort in the preparation and support the individuals who will wield the pencil, whatever its form.

The etymology of technology suggests habits of mind and communicating with and through one's tools much like a craftsperson does with their tools. Education is leading children into adulthood. Do we include teachers in the conversation about the choices and uses of tools in their classroom where children gather with real names and faces? Research says we should, but anecdotal evidence suggests that is not done.

We keep chugging along, fussing about the old model but making few significant changes other than rearranging desks in the classroom, tossing some technology at teachers, fretting about flipped and blended classrooms, worrying about integration of SAMR or the current cool thing, and wringing our hands over the digital divide. But mostly it feels like we're churning though occasionally tilting in the right direction.

Reform suggests that all we do is rearrange the deck chairs on a sinking ship. People from a distance, including the ubiquitous consultants who spend little or no time in real classrooms, rearrange classrooms, silence teachers' voices, and erase teachers from their very performance. Or, that is the impression given. When we combine Derrida's deconstruction and Dewey's reconstruction perhaps we can rethink what transforming classrooms and pedagogy can mean?

We'll hear more about the "digital use divide." We've already heard administrator frustration that interactive white boards are used mostly as projection devices. But we've also heard teacher frustration that they haven't gotten enough training to know how to use the resource well. Most teachers seem to be willing to use the resources they have, but they need to have the training and the support to use the resources effectively and even for what they were designed.

I think it will surge and not just because educators are feeling the pressure to integrate technology though they worry about doing it well, effectively, and/or appropriately. Adaptive + personalized learning is going to become even bigger, I think, though it requires, no, it demands that teachers think and act very differently in their roles as facilitators of learning.
