Connected Learning Manifesto for Connected Educator Month

Connected Learning Manifesto for Connected Educator Month | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

"A revolution in technology has transformed the way we can find each other, interact, and collaborate to create knowledge as connected learners." (Connected Learning Manifesto - http://plpnetwork.com/2012/07/23/connected-learning-manifesto/)

Justin Marquis wrote suggestions to also be added to the Manifesto and to further the discussion about the impact of connected learning. He focused on these topics:
- Connectivity/Collaboration
- Empowerment/Self-Directed Learning
- Creativity/Innovation
- Diversity/Breaking Down Boundaries
- Self-Awareness/Reflection
- Lifelong Learning

Really agree with the author’s statement: “Connected Learning helps develop the literacy skills necessary to survive in a hi-tech world.”
http://www.onlineuniversities.com/blog/2012/08/contributing-the-connected-learning-manifesto/

The Manifesto wants to hear from you. Add your thoughts, statements, or strong assertions to the Connected Learning Manifesto. - http://plpnetwork.com/2012/07/23/connected-learning-manifesto/

Reducing the Cost of Logging In to Learn

Reducing the Cost of Logging In to Learn | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

As public schools in Chicago have shifted their focus to online learning, the benefits have been blunted by the fact that home access to the Internet costs too much for some students, leading districts to look for different approaches to bring Internet access to the city’s poorest families...

... Some people, though, are concerned that a corporation [Comcast in this case] is playing such a large role in providing a basic tool of the public school curriculum. “We don’t want corporations to be filling in the gaps for what should be provided by local, state and federal governments,” said Jackson Potter, staff coordinator of the Chicago Teachers Union.

Comcast’s promotion of the initiative, he said, turns students into tools of the company’s marketing campaign.

#eXe project #opensource elearning application to assist teachers and academics in the publishing of web content #edtech20 | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

The eXe project developed a freely available Open Source authoring application to assist teachers and academics in the publishing of web content without the need to become proficient in HTML or XML markup. Resources authored in eXe can be exported in IMS Content Package, SCORM 1.2, or IMS Common Cartridge formats or as simple self-contained web pages.

eXe grew out of the New Zealand Government Tertiary Education Commission's eCollaboration Fund and was led by the University of Auckland, The Auckland University of Technology, and Tairawhiti Polytechnic. It was later supported by CORE Education, a New Zealand-based not-for-profit educational research and development organisation. It has also been greatly assisted by a global group of participants and contributors.

eXe was named a finalist in the New Zealand round of the IMS Global Learning Impact Awards 2008 and went on to claim a Leadership Award at the international judging. (eXe was rated Best in Show for "Content Authoring", and also one of the top 3 participant rated projects!)

#Zotero easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources #edtech20 #elearning | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

Zotero is an easy-to-use yet powerful research tool that helps you gather, organize, and analyze sources (citations, full texts, web pages, images, and other objects), and lets you share the results of your research in a variety of ways. An extension to the popular open-source web browser Firefox, Zotero includes the best parts of older reference manager software (like EndNote) — the ability to store author, title, and publication fields and to export that information as formatted references—and the best parts of modern software and web applications (like iTunes and del.icio.us), such as the ability to interact, tag, and search in advanced ways. Zotero integrates tightly with online resources; it can sense when users are viewing a book, article, or other object on the web, and—on many major research and library sites—find and automatically save the full reference information for the item in the correct fields. Since it lives in the web browser, it can effortlessly transmit information to, and receive information from, other web services and applications; since it runs on one’s personal computer, it can also communicate with software running there (such as Microsoft Word). And it can be used offline as well (e.g., on a plane, in an archive without WiFi).

To learn more about what Zotero can do, visit our Support pages.

To find out where Zotero is going, read our Roadmap.

Zotero is a production of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. It is generously funded by the United States Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
