Europe struggles with digital education

Europe struggles with digital education | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it
European higher education remains too conservative to adapt to technological innovations, said a Commission High Level Group on the Modernisation of Higher Education in its report published last week (22 October).

The group, which was launched in 2012 to examine such challenges, makes 15 recommendations to EU member states about how to integrate digital teaching and learning methods in their educational curricula.

Current learning systems are reluctant to leave behind conventional classroom methods and restructure the way universities and schools operate. Teachers do not have the necessary professional training to cope with new ways of schooling. The institutions themselves are poorly equipped with new technologies in order to deliver high quality, online education.

“Although Europe is starting to make progress, it is still lagging behind the US in using new technologies in our universities and colleges,” said Mary McAleese, the former President of Ireland, and chair of the High Level Group. “We should capitalise on the strengths we have, such as the wide use of ECTS [European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System] credits to ensure that digital learning in Europe is recognised, accredited and quality assured.”

Students are also reluctant to enroll in online degree programs, as an alternative to traditional, classroom-based ones, because many online courses do not offer credits towards obtaining a diploma. In fact, one of the group's recommendations to EU countries is that they recognise e-learning as a legitimate part of the educational system, and formalise it.

A New Kind of Warfare

A New Kind of Warfare | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it
Nations are developing disruptive offensive software — at great potential risk.

Cybersecurity efforts in the United States have largely centered on defending computer networks against attacks by hackers, criminals and foreign governments, mainly China. Increasingly, however, the focus is on developing offensive capabilities, on figuring out how and when the United States might unleash its own malware to disrupt an adversary’s networks. That is potentially dangerous territory.

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

The back-to-school season is responsible for billions of dollars spent on digital devices; laptops, tablets and smartphones are changing the way our children learn, and subsequently, the way they interact with the world around them. Unfortunately, many children fall victim to the negative aspects of technology: cyberbullying, sexting and online predation. While certainly all children won’t encounter these issues, it certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and it isn’t an excuse for you not to be aware. In today’s digitally connected world, one of the best things we can offer our child is our parental, involvement, education and vigilance. While you certainly don’t have to stay ahead of your kids when it comes to knowing about the coolest photo app, it is critically important that you know when they start using it; you have a safety plan in place, and you know what to talk to your kids about as well as have insured that all their digital devices are safety enabled.

Gust MEES: don't forget that Internetsafety alone isn't enough! You need also to protect the computer and other devices of "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD), check my FREE courses here:

What should get be taught and learned more in 21st Century while using ICT?

What should get be taught and learned more in 21st Century while using ICT? | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

Possible instructions for educators on how they can work together with the learners. Knowing the tools for 21st Century Learning is primordial to give quality courses.

One very important knowledge who needs to get taught is “Critical Thinking”; it brings out also new ideas and the courage to become an engager and helps to try to build a better world in both worlds: “Real World” and “Virtual World” (Internet)!

Can YOU drive a car (and this also safely) ONLY by getting theoretical courses and advice? YOU would surprise me, seriously, a BIG LOL for that. So how YOU will expect that someone could surf secure with his computer as it is “visually seen” the “vehicle” with whom users are driving on the “Data High Way” (Internet)!???

There is a need for practice, how!?

Find out more ideas, critical thinking and practice:
