A New Higher Education Model

Today, our public colleges and universities are facing some of the toughest challenges they have ever encountered. The choices they make about how they deliver quality education to the millions of students who depend on them will determine whether our country will continue to be a global economic leader, or whether other countries will surpass us in postsecondary achievement...

Cut Up Learning

Cut Up Learning | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

This post answers the question: Is information overload a problem our new digital society must solve or are we changing how we learn?

It makes the case for information curation.  Talks about some of the skills:  skiming, "Cut-up" learning,  and Mind-Hacking.

Content curation = cut up learning - goal isn't aggregation but to cut up the information to unlock trends and insights.  The sense-making part.  Technique made popular by William Burroughs.

Mind Hacking:    Social media us to peer over the shoulders of many -- some provide no value, some do.   Become adept at recognizing the difference.  Dunbar is for relationships, not information discovery

Summary:  Information overload may not be problem we have to solve but instead could lead to a new way of learning.  skimming things does not make us shallow, it may help us be rich.

Note to Self:  Need to track down the perspective from education and learning theory - related to information overload.

Divergent Convergence: Learning in a Multiplatform Transmedia World

Divergent Convergence: Learning in a Multiplatform Transmedia World | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

Expand your think thinking about books. A wide spectrum of technologies are part of this new world of publishing including ipods, iphones, playaways, and Nooks or Kindles.

Multi-format Options. At the most basic level, works are adapted for different formats. For instance, Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is available as a graphic novel that can also be downloaded to an i-phone. Watch a video about the translation into a graphic novel. Get students involved in writing for different formats. Consider a 140 Character Story project.

Document-Book Connections. David McCullough's 1776, The Illustrated Edition provides 130 illustrations with an abridged version of the text. In addition, 37 facsimile documents are scattered throughout the book in pouches.

Written for a young adult audience, Cathy's Book, Cathy's Key and Cathy's Ring by Sean Stewart and Jordan Weisman includes an evidence packet along with a website for each book. A website is also available for fans who want to discuss the book. The fictional character has Facebook and Flickr accounts you can visit.

Written for an adult audience, Personal Effect: Dark Arts by J.C. Hutchins and Jordon Weisman introduces an interesting multi-format approach to mystery reading. In addition to the text, the book provides a packet of materials along with supplemental website materials.

The Role Apple Played in the Rise of Social Media | Social Media Today

The Role Apple Played in the Rise of Social Media | Social Media Today | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

The success of social media is often attributed to the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s creator. What Mark has achieved is nothing short of simply amazing. His networking platform has transformed the way the world communicates, collaborates, advertises and consumes information.

For me though, there is one element of social networking that never gets the credit it deserves when we talk about its success. Technology. You see, without devices like iPhones, Android phones and innovative tablets, social networks simply would not get the air time they receive today. Companies like Apple and Google have created platforms that we want to spend time on rather than having to spend time on. Ask yourself, would you spend as much time on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter if you had to log on via a PC or Mac every time? I know I wouldn’t.
