Is Education Technology Doomed? - Edudemic

Is Education Technology Doomed? - Edudemic | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

The image of the one room school house is imprinted in many of our minds as the building block of our modern educational system. It all started there, with one teacher, a crowded space filled with students of all age ranges – including some who may have been older than the teacher – one blackboard, and few, if any, materials for the class to work with. Jump ahead to today and the image has changed drastically.

Alignment in Complex Education Systems - Papers - OECD iLibrary

Janet W. Looney

The majority of OECD countries now implement one form or another of standards-based assessment and evaluation. The core logic of standards-based systems rests upon the alignment of three key elements: standards defining the knowledge and skills – or competences – students are expected to have attained at different stages of their education; curricula, which cover the objectives identified in standards; and student assessments and school evaluations which measure attainment of standards. If systems are misaligned, it is impossible to draw valid conclusions about the success of student learning or to develop effective strategies for school improvement. Yet, no system can achieve perfect alignment. This report proposes that rather than thinking of alignment literally, as a lining up of the various elements and actors across systems, it may be more appropriate to approach it as a matter of balance and coherence. The discussion touches on both the technical and social dimensions of alignment.

Inkling: moving textbooks onto the iPad | building43

"Historically, textbooks have been neither fun to purchase (they're expensive) nor fun to lug around campus (they're heavy). And depending on the subject matter, they are often rendered obsolete by the presence of updated information or changes in thought. Inkling is addressing each of these issues by moving textbooks out of the physical world and into the digital world of the iPad."

Rapid Instructional Design for Accelerated Learning | Social Learning Blog | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

The Accelerated Learning Rapid Instructional Design (RID) model is based on the concept that people learn more from experience with feedback than from training materials and presentations.  The model replaces traditional media-heavy courses with activity-based courses that put the learners in charge of their own learning and enable them to learn with and from each other.

Dan concludes

"....Finally, these changes will definitely affect how schools will be held accountable Standardized tests will not be an affective way to assess student progress if students will not be memorizing facts, algorithms, and procedures. The structure of schooling will change as subjects will not be so divided by departments. Students will be collaborating and incorporating content from various subjects. There is no doubt that there will be a lot of change, but if I have one hope, its that I am still a “teacher” and haven’t been replaced by something else." Dan Le

Capturing Your Organization's Stories

Capturing Your Organization's Stories | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

We’re always hearing that stories can be effective in engaging donors or empowering volunteers. But it can be challenging to find ways of collecting or capturing stories, especially if your organization relies on a network of volunteers.

So I was intrigued when I saw that one of the “Movie Monday” videos (from 501 Videos) focused on collecting and sharing stories. In the short video, Zan McColloch-Lussier from Mixtape Communications, offers some simple, practical tips to help non-profit communicators gather stories from folks in the field.

To be successful, or even just a player in their respective industries, companies must have a personable relationship with their customers. The communications mix helps with this by capturing the stories and lore of the organization and relaying it back to the public. The problem however is that an organization is bound to have dozens or hundreds of stories, deciding which ones are relevant are a whole other story. This article defines the relevant articles as having 3 requirements; to be aimed at the heart, have a compelling character and have a good structure and length. I agree completely as both emotions and a face to the story makes it more personable, and a proper lenth allows it to be repeated easily.
Jack Tang's comment, May 9, 2013 2:01 AM
I agree with Kevin with if a company wants to be successful, they need to think about their consumers, in a simple words, company needs to build up relationship with the consumers. Therefore, consumers will purchase the product or service from that shop
An, SungBin's comment, May 9, 2013 10:52 PM
This article is about how the non profit organization can get the attention from the donor or volunteer by story telling. there is a three tips for it. and I think its a good tips for approach. firstly, they talking about aim for the heart. human is emotional animal and we are weak at emotional. so it is good to capture people's hearth to get helped. and with stories, we can personalize then, we can get more people to agree what we try to tell by the stories.

Storytelling, archives and linked data

Storytelling, archives and linked data | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

Imagine having a "story building tool" which enables a "narrator" to visit a linked data page provided by the National Archives of Australia or the Archives Hub or one of the other projects Tim refers to, and to select and "intelligently clip" a chunk of data which you can then arrange into the "story" you are constructing - in much the way that bookmarklets for tools like Tumblr and Posterous enable you to do for text and images now. That "clipped chunk of data" could include a description of a person and some of their life events and metadata about digitised archival resources, including URIs of images - as in Tim's examples.

How to Teach Online With Screensharing and Screencasts

How to Teach Online With Screensharing and Screencasts | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it
Sharing ideas visually is no new concept. A hundred years ago, teachers used chalkboards. Then, with the invention of the smelly, dry erase marker, we upgraded our boardrooms and classrooms with shiny whiteboards.

Then along came old fashion projectors, and we wrote on clear plastic, shining the ideas up on a pull-down screen. Years later, the projector has gone the way of the chalkboard though, because now we have digital projectors! “But wait!!” you say. “What about SMART Boards?!”

Can you replace your IWB with a $10 dollar app? | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

Idea Flight is a new idea that makes a first attempt at using iPads to replace both the expensive IWB and the data projectors in your classroom.

In many ways it's a great idea that centres around using a $10 (£7) iPad (Pilot) app to share materials and interact with a classroom full of students.
