Visual Language -- New Converging Forms of Storytelling

Visual Language -- New Converging Forms of Storytelling | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

Go to the URL listed below and download your free copy of this paper from Stanford Univ. on "Visual Language and Converging Technologies in the Next 10-15 Years."

http://www.stanford.edu/~rhorn/a/recent/artclNSFVisualLangv.pdf

It's a fairly easy read as academic articles go (and short!).  What I like about it are the cool points the authors make about how we are developing a visual-verbal language, and the nifty diagram showing how all kinds of different visual vocabularies from different fields are converging together.

It was written in 2001 so you are probably wondering why the heck I'm including it here.  It's because it seems the predictions have come true!

What does this mean for our business stories?  1) Understand how visual -verbal language works, and then 2) pick your visual vocabularies to share your stories and get your points across.  Read on for insights into how this convergence into a visual-verbal language is continuing to affect our future thinking, learning, knowledge retention, storytelling, and human potential.

7 Tips for SEO Keyword Optimizing Your Tweets

Written by Laura Liatti for Brand & Capture Blog

Curated by JanLGordon covering  "Content Curation, Social Media & Beyond"

Intro:

Twitter is one of the hottest ways to promote your business. Millions of people use Twitter and you can use this powerful social media tool to reach your target audience down the street or across an ocean.

A few popular (retweeted) tweets using an effective SEO keyword strategy increases traffic to your website and helps with search engine optimization at the same time.

Here's what caught my attention:

**Incorporate your keywords into your Twitter biography as part of a smart SEO keyword strategy.

**Search engines index the information in your biography. Twitter limits your biography to 160 characters so use your keywords wisely in sentences that are informative, clever and make sense.

**Use your keywords as hash tags whenever possible and appropriate. A hash tag is a pound sign, or "#". On Twitter, people use hash tags to participate in conversations about a particular subject.

**If your website offers baking tips, for example, precede your tweets with hash tag keywords like #desserts, #cookies and #cakes.

**Tweet at appropriate times for your particular set of keywords.

Cut everywhere, not just what you want to buy

Cut everywhere, not just what you want to buy | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

Where people should cut in their budget is not in what they want to buy or the extra luxuries they are cutting out of their lives — they should cut everywhere that they can.

If you don’t have money, you can’t spend on things that you think you need. Go back to the basics: Food, Shelter, Heat and Clothing.

Anything else is a luxury when you are on a shoestring budget, literally. Only when you have extra money, can you upgrade in other areas.

At Long Last, Facebook Releases an iPad App

At Long Last, Facebook Releases an iPad App | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

"After months of speculation, the Facebook iPad application is finally available as a free download."

Some have speculated that the delay in getting this App published was due to the tensions between Apple and Facebook.

But it could also very well be yet another sign of the current App vs HTML hesitation most web sites publishers face.

What will be the real key benefits of the Facebook iPad App over the Web site that worked well on the iPad?

After this year's Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Tomas Transtromer, blogger David Dobbs received an audio clip that seized his heart: a 1954 recording of Ernest Hemingway reading his acceptance speech.

(Hemingway did not attend the banquet, but had the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden read his short speech; soon after he recorded this audio in Cuba.)

Half an Hour: A Conversation on Innovation

Half an Hour: A Conversation on Innovation | Teaching in the XXI Century | Scoop.it

If we go one step beyond innovation, we have actually reached a cusp in the west. The economists don't have a theory any more. We are discussing the restructuring of democracy. These are crucial aspects of the times.

"I am both inspired by this and quite lost. There is a list of very important issues, but I don't connect what is written up there to what are the current hot topics. It's more, how to bring all these aspects we have discussed into some kind of order. There is a saying, form follows function. What are the forms of work organization? It depends on the goals that you've got. We've been reporting on these experiences. The question is how we transport these experiences into our lives, how do we change the paradigms here? We had much better strategies before the financial crisis; no we're not judging any more. We have to get it in line - the structures of our schools have to be different if we are to not hierarchically teach people, which means we have to change the schools..."

Mining TWeets for Tag Recommendation on Social Media

http://precog.iiitd.edu.in/Publications_files/DC_AS_SMUC_2011.pdf

"Automatic tag recommendation or annotation can help in
improving the eciency of text-based information retrieval
on online social media services like Blogger, Last.FM, Flickr
and YouTube. In this work, we investigate alternate solu-
tions for tag recommendations by employing a Wisdom of
Crowd approach in a mashup framework. In particular, we
mine tweets on Twitter and use their hashtag(s) and con-
tent to annotate videos on Flickr, Photobucket, YouTube,
Dailymotion and SoundCloud. We crawl Twitter to col-
lect a random sample of tweets containing Flickr, Photo-
bucket, YouTube, Dailymotion and SoundCloud URLs. We
then recommend tags for these services using hashtag(s) and
content present in tweets. We use a hybrid technique (auto-
mated and manual) to validate our results on di erent sub-
sets (presence / absence of hashtags, presence / absence of
media tags) of data. Experimental results demonstrate that
the proposed solution approach is e ective and reliable."
