Why (And How) Students Can Get Excited About STEM [INFOGRAPHIC]

Why (And How) Students Can Get Excited About STEM [INFOGRAPHIC] | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it
There's a lot of buzz out there about STEM - not only in the realm of teaching and learning, but in terms of job growth and potential, too.

According to the Smithsonian Science Education Center (the makers of the handy infographic), People who understand science and technology are smarter, more competitive, more productive, and more engaged global citizens.

The Mind's Eye: An Important Metacognitive Tool For Creative Thought

The Mind's Eye: An Important Metacognitive Tool For Creative Thought | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

“I carry my thoughts about with me for a long time, often for a very long time before writing them down. I can... be sure that... I shall not forget [a theme] even years later. I change many things, discard others, and try again and again until I am satisfied: then, in my head, I begin to elaborate the work... the underlying idea never deserts me. It rises, it grows. I hear and see the image in front of me from every angle.” - Ludwig Van Beethoven (quoted by Hamberger 1952).

How Twitter is Reinventing Collaboration Among Educators

How Twitter is Reinventing Collaboration Among Educators | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

TWITTER TRANSFORMS EDUCATORS

Before the advent of Twitter, most educators I know had limited opportunities to collaborate with colleagues outside their building. Some subscribed to listservs or participated in online forums, but these outlets lacked critical mass; teachers also networked at in-person conferences and training sessions, but these isolated events didn't provide ongoing support.

Enter Twitter. I've heard many educators say that Twitter is the most effective way to collaborate and that they've learned more with Twitter than they have from years of formal professional development.

Here are some of the specific ways educators are using Twitter to collaborate:

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

The back-to-school season is responsible for billions of dollars spent on digital devices; laptops, tablets and smartphones are changing the way our children learn, and subsequently, the way they interact with the world around them. Unfortunately, many children fall victim to the negative aspects of technology: cyberbullying, sexting and online predation. While certainly all children won’t encounter these issues, it certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and it isn’t an excuse for you not to be aware. In today’s digitally connected world, one of the best things we can offer our child is our parental, involvement, education and vigilance. While you certainly don’t have to stay ahead of your kids when it comes to knowing about the coolest photo app, it is critically important that you know when they start using it; you have a safety plan in place, and you know what to talk to your kids about as well as have insured that all their digital devices are safety enabled.

Learning with no Boundaries: Combined Classes

Learning with no Boundaries: Combined Classes | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

Today is Labour Day Monday, and I'm sitting in my office preparing for the first week back at school. Every year brings new challenges but I am a firm believer that most issues can be addressed if we are able to identify common ground and maintain our focus on what's best for kids.

One challenge we address each year is the creation of multi-age classrooms (split-grades) and the placement of children into the upper end of these grades. There are two reasons why we create multi-age classes. One is a philosophical belief in dividing students into better learning situations. By creating multi-age classes we help to divide and cluster kids with their peers and educators that are a better match for their educational needs. It also helps to make the classes more balanced and educationally “workable”.
Research (Phi Delta Kappan Vol. 80) has shown that there are four main benefits for multi-age classes.

· Younger children utilize older children to develop skills
· Mixed age classes reflect real society and real work situations
· There is more of an opportunity to match children according to needs and skills
· All children have the opportunity to become leaders and role models.

Remember: “Together is better.”

Engaging Students Through Social Media: Real World Experience, Creativity... | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

Social media has become an essential part of most people’s everyday lives, from checking Facebook and Twitter to posting blogs, Pinterest listings, and uploading YouTube videos. However, and with smartphones making it easier than ever to spend time on social media networks, in what ways can these networks be leveraged to engage and build a foundation for future student learning? While the potential of distraction is there, the right social media teaching strategies can lead to creative learning, and a productive approach to making social media part of ongoing professional development.

Study calls for stronger focus on IT and entrepreneurial skills in schools

Study calls for stronger focus on IT and entrepreneurial skills in schools | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it
European Commission - Press Release - European Commission Press release Brussels, 19 November 2012

The teaching of IT, entrepreneurial and citizenship skills is fundamental for preparing young people for today's job market, but, in general, schools are still paying insufficient attention to these transversal skills compared with basic skills in literacy, mathematics and science, according to a new European Commission report. Part of the problem is rooted in difficulties with assessment.

===> For example, only 11 European countries (Belgium Flemish community, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Finland) have standardised procedures to assess citizenship skills, which aim to develop critical thinking and active participation in school and society. <===

Such testing does not exist at all for entrepreneurship and IT skills in any of the 31 countries which took part in the survey (27 EU Member States, Croatia, Iceland, Norway and Turkey). The report also outlines progress in teaching six of the eight key competences defined at EU level for lifelong learning in knowledge, skills and attitudes.

“It is only by equipping children and young people with the necessary skills, including transversal skills, that we will ensure that the European Union will have the means to remain competitive and to seize the opportunities of the knowledge economy,” said Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.

"This study shows us where there is room for improvement and, most importantly, what we need to do to create more opportunities for our youth.

===> Rethinking education, a policy initiative that I will launch tomorrow, will outline concrete proposals for doing this." <===

A New Kind of Warfare | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it
Nations are developing disruptive offensive software — at great potential risk.

Cybersecurity efforts in the United States have largely centered on defending computer networks against attacks by hackers, criminals and foreign governments, mainly China. Increasingly, however, the focus is on developing offensive capabilities, on figuring out how and when the United States might unleash its own malware to disrupt an adversary’s networks. That is potentially dangerous territory.

20 Things To Know About How Big Data Is Changing Schools

20 Things To Know About How Big Data Is Changing Schools | Teaching in the XXI century | Scoop.it

Simply put, technology exists in some for or another across education. With that technology comes a push for understanding. That understanding has taken the form of ‘big data‘ entering the classroom. By ‘big data’ I mean high-tech software and analyzation of all the data being created by technology in education.

In other words, we’re finally trying to all figure out the best way to use technology in education. From measuring test scores to recommending courses, there’s a big push to leverage data. This should come as no surprise as the rapid growth of MOOCs, online colleges, and digital learning have gotten a lot of attention.

This infographic from Online Degrees sheds some light on projects currently underway at colleges, the pros and cons of ‘big data’ and a whole lot more. Have you started to use more data in your classroom? Would you take a course recommended by data or by a friend? A tough decision for sure. Looking forward to hearing your answers!
