Essay on how technology and new ways of teaching could upend colleges' traditional models | Inside Higher Ed | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Although massive open online courses have been gathering substantial recent attention, future histories of education will likely only note them as a harbinger of change or transitional step into an educational model that is organized around learning. In most cases, MOOCs operate on a grand scale but use a traditional form in which a faculty member (or two) is responsible for most aspects of course design, delivery, and assessment. The real threat to traditional higher education embraces a more radical vision that removes faculty from the organizational center and uses cognitive science to organize the learning around the learner. Such models exist now.

"Over the last few months most of us who work in higher education, as well as those who watch and comment on what we do have been fascinated by a singular topic: the MOOC. [...] They are very new, and no-one yet knows what they will mean or what role they will play. But many already believe that Pandora’s box has been opened. [...] For the first time in our existence, some are questioning the university’s purpose and future. [...] Clearly MOOCs are not the panacea, or a replacement, but they do contribute to a worldwide learning community, hungry to learn and engage with others who wish to do likewise."

This is the most thorough, comprehensive and balanced overview and analysis of MOOCs that I have read. This is not surprising since Sir John Daniel has had a long and distinguished career in open and distance learning, including being President of the Commonwealth of Learning and Vice-Chancellor of the UK Open University. He is currently a visiting research fellow at the Korean National Open University and an Education Master at DeTao Masters Academy, China. He thus knows of what he speaks."

I wholeheartedly agree, this was the first paper I ever read on MOOCs and it was very clear and beautifully presented.  A clear and informed outline of what the impact of MOOCs will be.  Highly recommended.
