Where’s Waldo: The missing group member | Torria Bond

An email from a student in my fully online course reads, “Waldo is in my group but I haven’t heard from him. I’ve emailed him several times; suggested that he contribute visuals to the group effort; and sent him a link to the collaborative group document to which he could add his work. It is now the day before the assignment is due and our group still hasn’t heard from Waldo. The group doesn’t want to lose points because of Waldo, especially since we have tried our best to reach him and include him in the assignment. What should we do about his part?”

What MIT Should Have Done

Ten thousand students have just taken the final exam in MITx's course "6.002x Circuits and Electronics." The sheer size of this course (120,000 first registered back in March), the high-wattage backing of MIT for a certificate of completion to all those who make it through to the end, and the free, open access nature of this MOOC (a "massive open online course") seemingly ushers in a fundamentally new paradigm in higher education. When coupled with the recent headlines about similar ventures such as Coursera, Udacity, and MIT's own new partnership with Harvard to form edX, the policy world has been positively aglow: David Brooks calls it a "campus tsunami"; John Chubb proclaims it an "historic transformation"; Thomas Friedman writes, simply, "welcome to the college education revolution."

Connecting the Digital Divide to Digital Literacies

Connecting the Digital Divide to Digital Literacies | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it

"The term 'digital divide' has long been used to describe the gap between those with access to communications technology and those without—applying to both home computer ownership as well as the delivery of home broadband access, which is still an issue. In fact, though 65 percent of households (pdf) have broadband access, that figure drops to 40 percent in households with less than $20,000 in annual income. More recently, the term has referred to the gap in the type of engagement with the digital world. It has come to mean the divide between those who use technology to learn and create and those who use it more for entertainment or staying up to date on social networking sites. It might easily be summed up as the gap between creators and consumers."

Educational Technology Guy: Unfettered by Stuff - or "Why I don't lug stuff home every night"

Educational Technology Guy: Unfettered by Stuff - or "Why I don't lug stuff home every night" | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it

It always amazes me at the amount of stuff some teachers seem to carry home every night and back into school the next day. They also are amazed at the fact that 95% of the time, I'm not carrying anything either way (except maybe my lunch). Two teachers asked me about this the other day and were shocked at why I don't have to carry things home to work on. I decided I'd also share that explanation here.

Early demographic data hints at what type of student takes a MOOC

Early demographic data hints at what type of student takes a MOOC | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Massive open online courses, or MOOCs, are popular. This much we know.

But as investors and higher ed prognosticators squint into their crystal balls for hints of what this popularity could portend for the rest of higher education, two crucial questions remains largely unanswered: Who are these students, and what do they want?

This is a great way to create eBooks from your own online content or from any content you find online.
You can create and share reading lists for courses. Create your own eBooks of yours or your students' stories. Create your own collection of your favourite articles. Collect a reading list of articles to read when you don't have an Internet connection. Webpages that you capture in this way can be much easier to read and of course you have all the eBook's mark up and note taking functions which will store all your annotations on the eBooks you create.
