Add new cool fonts to your Google presentations, they will also work on Google docs and vice versa.

To add a new font, open the drop-down menu of fonts, scroll down to Add fonts and select the ones you like.

Pew Research Report: The Rise of Online Video

A new report from the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project finds that online video is growing. 78% of online adults watch or download videos online, up from 69% in 2009, and the share of internet users who upload or post video online has doubled from 14% in 2009 to 31% today. Kristen Purcell, report author, explains these findings and the reasons behind them.

As higher education has embraced online education as a way to reduce costs, increase flexibility, and enhance access to students it is important to gain an understanding of the perceptions of instructors moving into online teaching. This study found a change in the beliefs and teaching presence of the instructors from their initial resistance to online teaching to an approach which is mindful of the student experience and promotes a dialogical approach to online learning.

Professors at Northwestern University are training students to build online identities that can advance their academic and professional careers.

 

When Kaitlin Jennrich first walked into her communications seminar last fall, she had no idea that the professor already knew of her affinity for pink cars and Olive Garden breadsticks­—and that she planned to share that knowledge with the class. It hadn’t taken much sleuthing on the professor’s part to uncover those inane nuggets. The 18-year-old freshman at Northwestern University had herself lobbed them into the public sphere, via Twitter.

I find it challenging to work out how to differentiate (or whether I am differentiating) lessons in secondary school classes where everything is driven by the needs of an examination system. This idea, that there are multiple incarnations of differentiation, I find quite helpful.

Mindsets Toward Learning

In addition to adopting the strategies and techniques that will help you grasp and remember information, you need to understand something about yourself as a learner that we believe will result in a fundamental change in the way you learn.  Gaining this understanding is so important that it will likely influence many other aspects of your life as well.  The information in this chapter relates to a concept researchers call mindset.  A mindset is a view you have of yourself as a learner, and it affects all the decisions you make about your learning-the effort you put forth, the risks you take, how you deal with failures and criticism, and how much of a challenge you are willing to accept.  Mindset was first described by Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford University.  Dweck (2006, 2009) explains that your view of yourself as a learner was likely formed in middle school (or even earlier) and has been affecting your learning ever since.  As you read this chapter, reflect on the concepts presented and try to figure out what kind of mindset you have and how you can develop a mindset that leads to optimal learning for you.

Higher education is in a "period of great experimentation" in the field of online learning, President Hennessy told a Berkeley audience last week, adding that he is confident its successes and failures will lead to new approaches to teaching that will benefit students.

"We're going to invent the future," Hennessy said, speaking during the opening Q&A of an online summit held March 7-8 at the University of California, Berkeley, "How Technology Impacts the Pedagogy and Economics of Residential Higher Education."

But in a system that relies on a traditional linear grade book approach to learning, is ensuring that no child be left behind actually keeping them from accelerating their education? Think More About Time

I devoted significantly more time than the estimated three hours per week to CorpusMOOC. I advise my students to schedule time for online courses like they do for face-to-face classes. The weeks I was able to follow my own schedule were much easier, but I failed to account for aberrations like travel or big deadlines. Get students to beta-test online course material or if that proves impossible overestimate the time needed to complete. Urge students to structure their time at start of the course for the entire semester.

The world is changing at an ever growing pace and in todays world students need to learn "how to learn." How do we as teachers help our students learn "how to learn"? By modeling it in our daily work with our students we can instill the skills and help them understand that we too are in the process of learning. 

Jackie Gerstein provides a post that explores how our roles are changing and how the roles of our learners are chaning because of Education 2.0-3.0 (with a link to a post that describes this).  

What does "teaching the process of learning" mean? A few of her points are below:

  • Modeling of learning processes needs to be intentional, strategic, and overt.
  • The educator should be familiar with and able to demonstrate metacognitive processe.
There are two additional points (well worth reading) as well as three points on shifts that need to be made for this to occur. As always Gerstein brings up an issue, provides insight into the issue as well as links to additional resources, and make you sit back and think about your teaching and your classroom.

I especially like the idea of modeling by explaining what thought processes one is going through when demonstrating or learning a task. It could be helpful to apply this when demonstrating how to do research or how to search a database.
