How to Create Videos to Capture Your Audience | Teaching Ideas and Tools | Scoop.it

When it comes to marketing strategy, videos are powerful. How powerful? On Facebook, for example, videos are shared 12 times more than non-video posts. And let’s not forget YouTube, the second largest search engine in the world (after Google, of course). The ability of videos to increase user engagement is unsurpassed.

According to YouTube’s statistics page, they get over 800 million unique visitors each month, users view more than 4 billion hours of video each month and upload 72 hours of video every minute. That’s a lot of potential for your video....

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 7, 2013 7:35 PM

This post provides some great audio and video tools that you might consider using with students. We know that students are engaged when multimedia comes into the classroom...and what better way to engage them than to have them become creators through the use of multimedia.

Learn about tools such as:

* Matterhorn, a free tool that "enables teachers to create recordings of lectures and classes." Are you thinking of flipping your class? If so you should check out this tool.

* Jing - another free tool that allows you to capture what is happening on the screen of your computer and then share it with others. How about having students demonstrate ways to solve math problems, and post them online?

* Splicd - Is that YouTube video too long? Determine which section you want and grab that specific section. Save it to your hard drive and you ready to go...without taking time to fast foward to the necessary section.

* UJam - Another free tool this one allows you to create and remix music and film.

Three more tools are listed in the post so click through to check them out!

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 15, 2013 7:13 PM

StoryToolz provides seven resources to help authors.

* The Story Idea Generator "picks a random conflict from each of the Internet Public Library's list of 7 plots, 20 plots, and 36 plots."

* Random Conflicts combines "the Internet Public Library's list of 7 plots, 20 plots, and 36 plots" and "randomly presents 10."

* Word Count Meters allows you to keep track of and share your progress.

* Readability - This tool analyzes your text. It will tell you the reading level (based on a number of different indexes); sentence information, including the number of characters, words, paragraphs and more; word usage; and sentence beginnings (type of word).

* Half Title Generator - Select from a list of beginnings and then for ends of a title and see what comes up!

* Example Word Count Meters - show actual word counts of existing projects as well as the goal

* Cliche Buster - Reviews your text and lets you know if it finds any cliches.

This tool would most likely work best with students in middle school, high school and college. Students might also use it as a tool to check their story before having a peer edit the story.

Corey Durward's curator insight, July 21, 2013 5:55 PM

StoryToolz is a nice ensemble of useful tools for writers. Writers who are struggling to come up with ideas for their prose will like the story starters - random idea generators for plots, conflicts and titles. StoryToolz also provides tools that will analyse your work, identify clichés in your writing, and evaluate its readability.

This infographic provides a look at how we may develop 21st century critical thinkers. Using an image of a brain with eight areas that look at skills we need to know how to use,and that correspond with 21st century skills found in the Common Core and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

In addition there are six that we as teachers should be doing within our classrooms including:

* Integrate critical thinking skills within and across all content areas

* Establish safe, intellectually risk-free learning environments

* Allow time to develop critical thinking skills.

There is also a section called "Your Students' Path to Critical Thinking" that includes 25 recommendations.
