A world at peace is a world that has learned to communicate.
One central mission of the World Language Education program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is to prepare and certify teachers of French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Chinese, although other languages are always welcome to join us. The program provides the rare opportunity to observe and participate in classroom activities in Elementary, Middle, and High Schools across the four semesters of the regular teacher certification program. We emphasize an approach to language teaching that combines knowledge of professional standards for both languages and teacher education, with an in-depth understanding of language acquisition and intercultural competence. Each student in the program develops a web-based portfolio that is available to school principals and other potential employers when students finish the program and prepare for the job market.
The other central mission of the program is to prepare graduate researchers in World Language Education, including issues of bilingualism, inclusiveness, and globalization at the Masters and the Ph.D. levels. Courses are selected to address the needs and interests of the students in the graduate program. There is a brief description of these programs on this website as well as here on the School of Education website. Interested students should contact Marilyn Fearn, the graduate program coordinator in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, for information regarding admissions to the graduate program.
The Teaching Foreign Languages workshop will help K–12 foreign language teachers improve their practice by making connections between the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning and current research in foreign language education. Workshop components include eight lively half-hour video programs with leading researchers and practicing teachers discussing how the standards play out in day-to-day classroom situations, a workshop guide available online and in print, and interactive activities on the Web.
Become a student yourself as you watch the videos, complete a range of activities designed to stimulate your teaching, and prepare to conduct action research in your own classroom. You will come away with a deeper understanding of the national foreign language standards, and with ideas for implementing effective assessment strategies and working with learners across a range of language and skill levels.

Since the year 1843, several revolts against the existing government have taken place in Mexico, and the diplomatic intercourse between us has been of increasing importance, not only on account of the Texan dispute, but in consequence of a growing anxiety as to what is likely to be hereafter our Southern boundary, and along what parallel of latitude it is to run westwardly towards the Pacific. These considerations have induced me to revise a work, which, three years ago, I prepared for the press in the brief space of thirty days; and,—whilst I crave pardon for that act of indiscretion, and am thankful for the favor with which it, nevertheless, was welcomed—I must frankly declare that I have found no cause to alter the statement of a single fact or opinion. My aim was to present an unprejudiced picture of Mexico, and I hope I may be permitted to declare without vanity, that I have the satisfaction to know from Mexicans whose good esteem is worthy of all respect, that my views of their country and their character were received as the most just and favorable that had been published.
